CAA 4 - FBS 4

Post by BlueHen86 »

If there is one thing I hate more than arguing whether the CAA is better than every other FCS conference, it's agruing whether the CAA North is better than the CAA South, so I'll try an put an end to the CAA North vs South pettiness.

Every CAA team plays 1 FBS this year - all on the road.

So Far:
Richmond 24 Duke 16
Northeastern 0 Boston College 54
UMass 17 Kansas St 21
Villanova 27 Temple 24
W & M 26 Virginia 14
Towson 14 Northwestern 47
JMU 35 Maryland 38 OT
UNH 23 Ball St 16

4-4 vs FBS is not bad.

Games left:
Maine @ Syracuse 9/26
URI @ UConn 9/26
Hofstra @ Western Michigan 9/26
Delaware @ Navy 11/14

Impressive only in that they beat FBS teams, for which we are all happy but, these are not the cream of the crop of the FBS, sort of the sour cream.

App beat Michigan a bit ago
UNI almost took down Iowa St
Chuck South took on Florida St.
TXST will tackle TCU

Not trying to belittle what any team has done, and lord knows we are going to most likely be embarrassed after next Saturday, but all this chest thumping is a little grandiose when you see who the FCS/CAA are beating. When we start taking down some of the consistently good FBS teams, that's when I think we can start to crow. Until then I would fully expect the better FCS teams to do what they have against mediocre (and less) FBS competition. (Even if the rest of the FBS world homers don't)

(and I know who we lost to last year...believe me that was way embarrassing.)

Agreed. It is smart scheduling by the CAA, but I don't see them taking on the Texas Techs, the West Virginias, the Cals, they BYUs, and the Oregon States of the BCS. They take the bottom feeders and squeek by, which is great, but not surprising.

Impressive wins for the CAA but still as catmom pointed out there is no real great competition there, not at all trying to take away from your guys accomplishments. And in regards to Maine and Syracuse i have to be honest and say im quite dissapointed with the Black Bears this year, barely beating St. Cloud State and then having a poor performance against lowly Northeastern so i think the Cuse will smack the Bears in that game :twocents:

Id JMU could have kept up their end of the bargain :shake:  the CAA would have a winning record vs I-AA. Meanwhile the rest of I-AA by my count is 0-38.

Yes, one of the better FBS schedules I've seen.

Ours isn't always great either but we try
  • 2003-New Mexico
    2004-Baylor :?
    2005-Texas A&M
    2006-Kentucky
    2007-Baylor :?
    2008-SMU :?
    2009-TCU
    2010-TCU
I think our best game, even though we lost, was against TAMU, worst was NM or KU. Can't decide. Then again, it may have been SMU cause we came out with "deer in the headlights" George was horrendous and we gave then 2 TD's in the 1st from turnovers. Ended up losing by 11 and shouldn't have lost. However, if we had won I wouldn't have been bragging. SMU sucks big time.

UMass took on Texas Tech last season...lost...but we step up...we have Michigan next year...

K-State (prior to this past weekends loss) was considered middle of the pack...

I'm pretty sure Delaware has a .500 record against Navy over the years. It's hard to guage where they are this year.

Does anybody think Hofstra can actually beat Western Michigan? I'm a little scared right now. Western Michigan is actually my #1 team ahead of MIchigan (for school pride purposes). I should be at that game in October but with the eggs they just laid against Indiana and Michigan, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pride get that upset.

pretty good record and it goes to prove a point. The upper of FCS can compete and win against mid/lower FBS just like the top of D2 can compete with the FCS. 4-4 (should be winning record) is great unfortunately I don't think ESPN will pick up on that anytime soon.....

Oh, they've picked up on it... but it's not to give props to the FCS, it's more "What's wrong with the ACC" articles.

Not that what you posted has one damn thing to do with what I said but... get over it. I fucked up. At least I can admit when I'm wrong but I'm not putting poll standings here, am I? I'm trying to make a legitimate point. I'm not going to rack my brain to try and find where I got that. Probably KillerFrogs.com if I were to guess.

Ya know at least I'm here and I'm contributing with some logical arguments (on occasion)

What chest thumping? What crowing? All I did was post results and a future schedule. If somebody is "chest thumping" and "crowing" about the CAA and it upsets you, respond to them, don't accuse me of it.

Unless you think I was "chest thumping" and "crowing" when I said 4-4 is not bad. Maybe I should have said acceptable, or does that come across as arrogant?

Maine did beat Mississippi State.

It is better to beat a Mid-level BCS team then to get beat by a top level BCS team.

I agree. I'd rather beat Temple or Navy than lose at Florida. I'd rather beat West Chester than lose at Florida.

Syracuse

When's the last time they had a legitimate team? J/k dude, Pitt is legit, I don't know when you played Miss St, BC, or Braska, but those are tough teams for any FCS opponent. I'd love to see you guys pound the crap out of Paulus this year.

... and to the other uneducated, drive through diploma grasping EWU fan on this board, plenty of CAA teams have played these "powerhouse" FBS teams you speak of. I recall a couple JMU games vs Virginia Tech and West Virginia... obviously we lost vs these top 10 teams, but the fact is we scheduled them and got blown out just as bad as you guys did against a Cal team... well maybe not as bad, but pretty close. ;)

USA Today has...
"CAA rolls:

New Hampshire continued the strong showing of the Football Championship Subdivision's Colonial Athletic Association by knocking off Ball State 23-16 Saturday to run the CAA's record against Bowl Subdivision teams this season to 4-4.

The Wildcats have won five consecutive games against FBS schools and join Richmond (Duke), William & Mary (Virginia) and Villanova (Temple) as CAA teams with FBS wins in 2009. James Madison almost joined that club Saturday but lost in overtime to Maryland 38-35. The CAA played all of these games on the road."

They didn't mention UMass losing @ Kansas State only 21-17 nor what makes the CAA's success stand out even more is that the rest of I-AA is 0-38 vs I-A...

The conference consistantly has a rep in either the semis or NC game...while other conferences consistantly send the same team...or none at all...

Colonel, I'm happy for the CAA. I was cheering for them in each and every one of their games with FBS opponents. Every win against an FBS team is good for the the school, the conference and all of FCS. I do however get tired when someone (and I know you don't) uses wins against FBS opponents to trot out a we're better than you, na na na na argument (i.e. we're 4-4 everyone else is 0-38). It's crap like that that makes me want to cheer for the FBS school in those match-ups. Have some class, be proud of the victories and don't rub it in to the schools that didn't get over the hump this year.

Two points...

1. Spot on, and those who try to use this years success in the future could face the problem of a down year...using last years experience to predict this year is as dangerous as a pre-season poll...

2. Folks love to bash the CAA simply because it is large, and East Coast based...it's all OK.....
