Ask Bryant University football coach Marty Fine to discuss Hofstra, his opponent Saturday, and he will reply, "Do we have to?"

"We're overmatched," he added quickly.

Fine sought opponents such as the University of Massachusetts last year and Hofstra and Fordham this season to gauge the progress of his program during its transition to Division I from Division II.

"We have to play these games so we know where we are and where we want to go," he said. Northeastern is on a future schedule, and Bryant administrators are trying to arrange games with the University of Rhode Island and Brown. Hofstra is on the schedule again in three years.

Should be a good test for both teams to see how they are doing

I was going to go to this game, but after that remark I think I will go to the local high school game.

Marty Fine is infamous for talking down the team. In 2007 he said if the team wins 3 games we will be lucky. They lost too many players, and then they started off 7-0 before going to Stony Brook and losing. He has been saying the team is no good every year since about 2005.

a little I agree.

He is getting the job done. He keeps the players focused (especially in the class- had a class with a few of the players he would come in during their presentations to watch and then afterwords grill them with questions to let them know they weren't just skating through what they were doing) and he is liked by the students that he teaches (some freshmen welcome class).

Marty Fine does a short coaches show every Monday. Get to hear in on the previous game and the upcoming game. The first one of the season is tonight.

I was extremely happy because we were down 31-3 at one point before being down 31-10 at the half. We came back to 31-24 and if not for being too excited right after that touchdown it might of turned tides. Right after the TD all the players were looking to the crowd and jumping up and down. The do well on the kickoff and do well to make it to 3rd down. Then they try to go to the crowd again for noise and oops they miss coverage and Hofstra gets a big 50+ yard touchdown.

Then both teams just ran out the last 4 1/2 mintues of the clock by running.

I would think Bryant is very happy and knows they are making the right steps towards building the team and its the right way to do it.
