Pundits sure, but not policy makers and those in power. And not to this extent. Trump is a loathsome person, and a terrible leader. But, broken clocks, as the saying goes, are right twice a day. Just like in his first term, when he had seismic successes in shifting reality on the ground in the Middle East via the Abraham Accords, he may very well of pulled off something similar this time around.

Israel gets a lot of credit too as it was their heavy lifting over the past year that decimated Hamas, Hezbollah, and marginalized the Houthis, and that clearly weakened Iran as they were heavily counting on their proxies to keep Israel from attacking Iran directly. Israel then gets the credit for planning and executing a pretty decisive blow to Iran's government and nuclear program just after the international group, IAEA, broke the news that Iran was moving way past the enrichment targets of a non-weapon program. Without Israel doing this we could be looking at a nuclear Iran by this time next year - it would be like having another North Korea, but now in an even more volatile part of the world.

And Trump should get credit for taking the step to take the opening that Israel gave him to hit the nuclear facilities we had to hit to derail the program and to be able to do it with as minimal risk to our planes and pilots as anyone could've imagined. The opportunity was there and we took it, to the benefit of the region and likely the world. And he should get credit for keeping it only to that action and to that goal. So far, we haven't tried to overthrow the government and haven't allowed this to escalate into something else. Still a little too early to celebrate, but these are good outcomes so far. The broken clock was right this time.

Even the Trump hating libs admit it..
But I’m not a blind tribalist and am perfectly comfortable praising President Trump for bold and courageous actions in support of America’s core national interests, as he took last night.

Iran has been at war with the United States for 46 years. Its regime has murdered thousands of American citizens. Its slogan “death to America“ was not window dressing but core ideology. It was racing toward a nuclear weapon with every intention of using it to threaten America, our allies, and the Middle East region as a whole.

No actions like this come without risks, and I imagine the story will get more complicated over time, but that’s why these types of decisions are complicated.

Although I believe electing Kamala Harris would have been better for our democracy, society, and economy, as well as for helping the most vulnerable people in the United States and around the world, I also believe VP Harris would not have had the courage or fortitude to take such an essential step as the president took last night.

The irony is, though, that CNN, prior to the bombings, was also questioning the assessment that Iran was even close to nuclear weapons. So which is it? Before the bombing they say Iran wasn't close, but now, after the bombing they say Iran is even closer than ever. Did the bomb damage push Iran closer to nuclear weapons? Or is CNN's journalistic position to be as contrarian as possible? :coffee:

I wonder if these are the same Intelligence Analysts who claimed that Kabul was “not right now in any imminent threat environment” a day or two before the Taliban took over.

Yeah, in Aug 2021 CNN quoting ‘unamed’ defense intel sources with these gems:
Kabul could be isolated by the Taliban in the next 30 to 60 days, increasing the potential that the Afghan capital could fall under the control of the militant group, according to a senior administration official familiar with one US intelligence assessment.

Another assessment puts the potential collapse within 90 days, according to another US official…
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/08/11/poli ... ul-taliban

Afghanistan fell in 10 days.. :dunce:

Looks like he fucked that up too - Iran still has enough fissile material for about 10 bombs and the consensus outside Maggatland seems to be that at best Iran has been delayed for a few months.... :ohno:

I would love to have someone explain to me exactly how this mystical "nuclear deal" that was reached under the Obama administration was supposed to work in its original format.

And also, its pretty funny how the narrative shifted from "Iran cannot make a nuke and they were years if not decades away", to they were only enriching uranium for peaceful purposes and Israel is just being paranoid", to now that they were only a few months away from obtaining a nuke, and destroying their nuclear research facililties only sped up the development process.

The Readers Digest version was we have to make it look like a big diplomatic win but all we’re really doing is kicking the can down the road until I get out of office…. somebody else can deal with the problem.

This is the same train of logic that Putin used to justify invading Ukraine in 2014 and in 2022. Ironic, isn't it?
