Taiwan Jones and EWU slaughter Wolves in Cheney

Post by Screamin_Eagle174 »

Sophomore Taiwan Jones (pictured) scored on an 87-yard run on his first carry as an Eastern Washington University running back. But is wasn't that easy the rest of the way in EWU's 35-14 non-conference college football victory against Western Oregon Saturday (Sept. 5) at Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash.

I got to the stadium a little late... walked into to see Matt hand-off to Jones on EWU's first play, then swing out left and bust it all the way down the field! :D

It was a sloppy game, and I hated seeing Nichols throw 2 picks on back to back drives, but a win's a win. We gotta play better than that or next week it'll be 63-10 against Cal. :shake:

Our AD and University President met with the Appeals Committee August 17th to present their case. It's likely we won't know until late October or early November.

Take away the 87 yard run and he had 35 yards on 11 carries. Not necessarily lighting up the DII competition. All the hype and this is what the rest of the conference needs to be afraid of?

Anyone know how this compared to Reynolds for Montana and Smith for Weber? FWIW, McClintock for Portland State had 2 rushes for 2 yards, not really too good. McClintock was done after the second series with a concussion.

Congrats to Eastern on the win :thumb: , however i dont think you guys "slaughtered" Western Oregon at all. They held your high potent offense to only 21 points in the first three quarters and it was 21-14 at the end of the third, this was a much closer game then the final score shows, not taking away from your win but you guys didnt slaughter them :twocents:

Tbird my friend, there are certain nuances and so forth that you missed on this. There are a boatload of smartasses on this site ( ) that make subtle comments and so forth for the benefit of others in the humor category. For instance if you've read the "Wolves" thread that Grizzaholic started a few months ago and followed along with that soap opera you would get the title a little more clearly. :thumb:

I thought it was pretty good Scremin Eag.

Since when do break away plays for big yardage not count in the final stats? :coffee:

I guess Sean Canfield's 87-yard pass (also on the first play from scrimmage) to James Rodgers for a TD doesn't count either? Take away Kavanaugh's TD and the Vikings didn't score at all. :coffee:

A non-counter DII win and a guaranteed loss FBS game? Seems like the Eags might have scheduled themselves out of the playoffs this year, even if they weren't banned...

This is getting old and tired, much like the person in your avatar. It's not EWU's fault we have 2 BCS schools and an NFL team in our state to root for, fund through ticket purchases, and take the majority of funds allocated by the state to institutions of higher learning, unlike Montana. Eastern has to scrounge to keep it's programs afloat, which includes scheduling money games every year. Montana on the other hand has only MSU to compete with for fan support and funding, which leaves the UM AD fiscally independent of scheduling money games, and providing the glorious option of instead bringing cupcakes into Missoula to satiate the Grizzly bear's sweet tooth.

They do count. My point is it is one play. Good blocking, bad tackling, and good speed can come together and create a helluva run. I guess, playing a lower class (EWU with WOU, OSU with PSU), one should expect more than one breakaway, especially with all the hype. Your game with WOU sounds like it was closer than our game with OSU so I would think Jones would have had more opportunities to break another one, just using his speed alone.

Not really necessary with either Rodgers kid to play more than they did. One and done was par for the course, as they both had their big days last year against USC. This was Jones first game at tailback and I would have thought he would have been featured more. 10+ yard average looks when it is your first game, but with 87 yards coming on the first play, that kind of loses its luster.

BTW, that first OSU TD was based on speed alone. Rodgers just ran past both the corner and the safety. I highly doubt we will see that kind of speed in conference play.

I somewhat agree, Scream. I know where your coming from with the funding for EWU as compared to the FBS schools. We have the same issue with our FBS schools, which is why I get upset instead of elated with a meltdown on national TV. I heard we got $400,000 for the OSU game which will cover all our football expenses for the year.

Where I lose you is when you bring in Montana State. Montana thrives on their prior football success to generate revenue. Montana State does not have that luxury, and also has to take a money game in order to get funds to get through the season. This year was Michigan State. Last year was Minnesota. They've also played Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Wyoming. Their schedule is on par with other Big Sky OOC schedules. If Montana State was on equal funding with Montana, I would think the Bobcats would not schedule these FBS games, and instead would schedule like Montana.

Exactly, it was his first game at running back (at least at the college level)... he's still getting a feel for it. I'd say for his first time out (even against a decent D-II) squad, the numbers he put up were pretty impressive. Time will tell after he plays more and against tougher competition how good he really is. Also note that Baldwin didn't dig very deep into the playbook at all. Our schemes were pretty basic; he said that he didn't want to reveal everything we can do before playing Cal.

The reason I mentioned MSU is because they are the only other Division I school/program in the state. Obviously they thrive in UM's shadow, but those two are the top dogs. No BCS, no NFL.

Keep in mind that Montana, being the 4th largest state, has a population of approx. 960,000. Washington is 6.5 million + and Oregon is around 3.5 mil.

Jones-EWU: 122 yds on 12 carries, 2 TDs, long of 87, 10.2 yds avg.
Dailey-CSUS: 101 yds on 19 carries, 0 TDs, long of 14, 5.3 yds avg.

Smith-WSU: 97 yds on 14 carries, 0 TDs, long of 49, 6.9 yds avg.
First off, this is not a bad football message board you all have here.

My point. Usually one takes the long and short run and tosses them out, it just gets rid of the anomoles.

EWU: 3.18ypc down from 10.2ypc
CSUS: 4.83ypc down from 5.3ypc
UM: 4.70ypc down from 5.6ypc
WSU: 3.69ypc down from 6.9ypc

Your "guy" really didn't do all that much if you take out his one big run. It seems that the CSUS and the UM guys seem to be a little more consistant.
