Oh good god......this again
My exact thoughts...

There are several schools in the west that are ready to "move up". So long as any BSC team has to "churn" players to remain competitive (and about half do...) BSC isn't ready as a conference to go FBS. Montana is ready to go FBS and has been for years. All it would take is a minor increase in budget to make the transition. Idaho and Utah State need to be bumped down neither have shown the willingness to invest in their football programs (yes...they do invest...but only when their backs are in a corner). The Great West needs to become the feeder conference for western D2's looking to move up (sorry GW fans), having said that, Cal Poly and UCD should move to the BSC and Idaho State over to GW (this is contingent on UCD getting serious about their recruiting...which may happen with a new OC and DC this year...Biggs needs to "change his methods" to remain competitive).
If Weber continues to invest in their program, and maintain the caliber of coaching they've developed under McBride...they'll rise to the top of the BSC if Montana departs. Ergo...Weber would be the next in line to go FBS.
To those who challenge the notion that a move to FBS is an "advancement"...any time you get a pay increase, that's an "advancement"...and the FBS is a "pay increase"...

Fire away, folks...

Some of it comes down to whether you want to be a small fish in the big pond, or big fish in a smaller pond. There is no right answer - it is what is best for the school/state (if public).

Problem is for you BF is that you never the feeling we were talking about as a player and now you are just like the rest of us and just a fan. My reference was to you in the current state of just being a fan and will probably never know the feeling of being there even as a fan. You see as you let me know the feelings that I haven't enjoyed as a player, I let you know the feelings you have never enjoyed as a fan. Sorry man it's just the facts.

As far as losing in the first round..yeah I suppose that's as good as winning another game or two. Or that could just be the mindset that you are comfortable with.

That's good you feel this way (as if you have a choice in the matter)...guess you can get used to anything...like winning consecutive, multiple national titles......or being happy and satisfied with yet another bridesmaid outing.....
I think I covered the "as if you have a choice in the matter" part of that in the first sentence where I said "I'd rather win em' but a lot of shit get's by you. Multiple national titles, we know that feeling. Consecutive...you got me there. I didn't say anything about "happy and satisfied" with a runner up spot. I said I'd rather have that than the 3,4,5, .....git what I'm saying now?

Maybe someday Appa you'll know the feeling of beating Montana. I do know the feeling of beating App was a pretty good one. Someday buddy, someday...

Lose in the SECOND round [beat #1 seed SIU AND beat #1 seed Mcneese State] & still have 2 conf. rings?
or
Be a fan & watch a team not affiliated with you in anyway lose in the championship???

I think we enjoyed the opportunity for a Weber rematch and to go to JMU and kick their butt in the semis more than we enjoyed getting bounced in the first round at home by Wofford the year before.

We also believe you have to be pretty good to lose 4 NC games.

But winning three in a row gets a salute of highest respect from all of us. Not easy to do.

Well said, however my question was:

Would you rather be a player, beat the #1 seed twice but also lose in the 2nd round twice, however still have 2 conf rings..
or
Not be a player/alum, & watch a team, that has no direct affiliation with you personally, lose in the Nat'l championship?

That's real easy. Having a shot at the NC is what you play for. I was a player (but before 1-AA and playoffs existed); you don't go out there to have to explain "yeah, but's;" you go out there to get your shot at the big one. When you do, win or lose, no explanations are required. Maybe the Eagles will understand some day. I expect you to weather the current storm and remain in the top three in the BSC.

But BSC championship rings do not mean what they did in the early 90's.

I think the Big Sky should remain FCS, cause aside from the money there is nothing to gain, Big Sky teams will never be able to fight for a national title, they will always get stuck with the lowest bowls available.

If Montana thinks they are good enough to move up and win consistantly in the WAC or Mtn West, I dont, but you never know, they will beat Utah State and Wyo every year, but I dont see UM beating the best teams of either conference.

Besides Montana is a team that has a shot at greatness every year, they move to the FBS level take their shot at conference titles away and shots at National Championships away.

What would Montana fans rather have? Me as a Weber State fan ( even though it would never happen ), would rather have Weber State stay as a FCS team then go into the FBS and be a USU, Idaho, or Wyo every year.

But I think teams like Idaho and USU should be forced to join the fcs, USU hasnt had a winning season in 12 years. Im not sure how many losing seasons Idaho has had in a row, but im sure its alot.

Sac state,
Idaho State
Nor Col

Alright, just looking at the title of this thread it became quite obvious this is some very wishful thinking on BF's part. When looking at the Big Sky there are only two teams that remotely have a shot of moving up and that is Montana and Montana State. Maybe Weber State in a couple years if they can keep their succses going (as their campus is the fastest growing campus in the state, and if fans will actually show up for games  ). I say only those teams because Montana has had continued succses and one of the most known teams in college football, and Montana State because i dont think the Griz would want to move up without bringing their little brother with them. But both Montana and Montana State in order to do that would have to increase their varsity sports and their schollies and it seems like they are not willing to do that just yet. Other then those three...i dont see any Big Sky Schools moving up anytime soon.

I don't know why Florida Atlantic gets used as an example of a "mostly not so successful" I-FBS team.

They have played 8 years of football in their history, 4 in I-FCS and 4 in I-FBS. In both years they have been eligible for post-season play in I-FBS they went to and won a bowl game. They set a record as being the team to get to a bowl the fastest from starting a program. I think even the mighty Montana, if it reclassified to the FBS, might take longer than the first year of eligibility to go to a bowl, let alone win it.

Only Montana in the Big Sky could realistically compete in I-FBS in the first few years.

The main beneficiary of the Big Sky moving to I-FBS in mass would be the Sun Belt, as that conference would no longer be the cellar dwellar in the FBS. Well, the PAC Ten, the MWC, and WAC would benefit as well because they could pad their schedules with more than one Big Sky team that counted. USU would probably have a winning season if they could play a few Big Sky teams each year.

The thought is a joke. The BSC is a better match for DII than it is for FBS, both competitively and attendance-wise.
