Athletes in legal trouble

Post by JayJ79 »

It certainly seems like I hear of athletes (especially football players) getting into more and more legal trouble these days, than they used to.

I figure it is due to one (or more) of the following situations:
a) Athletes really are misbehaving more.
b) Athletes are doing the same types of things that they have always done, but law enforcement is just cracking down more on them.
c) The number of incidents are the same, we just HEAR more about them because of increased media coverage.

Anyone have any input/guesses on which of those apply?

Personally, I have to believe that there have always been athletes that get carried away with the drinking, or that get a bit too rowdy in bars, or that occasionally partake in a little weed or whatever. So I'm thinking it has to be B or C.

The answer is b & c. but mostly B.

I think you could argue that some of the athletes in the past behaved MUCH worse than they do today. Cops just used to be good 'ol boys that always let athletes go.

Makes me wonder if they are cracking down more on EVERYONE (or at least all college-aged kids),
or if it's just the athletes they're focusing on.

Or perhaps in the past, athletes got more of a "free pass" because they were athletes, and that isn't the case anymore.

The fucked up thing about parties in Cheney is, the fucking frat & student/off campus housing, is mixed with regular Cheney residents. Why in the fuck, would you live within 5 miles of a University located in a rural area? rant over.

anyway the residents were always calling the police and having them cruise by or bust it up. The coaches at Eastern did a good job of making the coach lowest on the totem pole the "if your drunk at 3:00am, call me, ill come get cha. here, save my number in your phone!" guy. ;)

Read through a college newspaper any given week and there are dozens of students who have been arrested. Cops are cracking down more, but I don't believe they are targeting athletes, they are targeting the dumbasses who drink and drive, start a fight, etc. You hear about the athlete more because they are the athlete. Nobody cares if Mary Joe got arrested for underage possession and a fake ID, but if AE or Flanders were arrested for the same it'd be all over the news. The media is fanatical about this crap: "Oh lordy, the football team is in a state of disarray! The university should be ashamed of itself."
