Playoff round one matchups
Geography plays a big part in round one playoff game scheduling, yes? Let's say two VA teams from the CAA South make the playoffs, let's say this often happens---JMU/Richmond/ODU/W&M). Max three hours seperates these schools, all interstate.
Would the NCAA geography variable cause the CAA-South to kill its own in round 1 of the playoffs every season this happens or does the NCAA try to prevent round 1 conference matchups?
I'm using the CAA b/c I know the CAA, the example could be SoCon or any conference that has two teams that often make the playoffs and are close geographically.

NCAA rules - no conference matchups in round one.

Re: Playoff round one matchups
Everything changes for the 2010 season also. I would imgaine the "no conference matchups rule" may change to no conference matchups in the "opening round."
Seeding will be the top 8 teams. Those 8 teams plus another 4 will get byes into the first round and the 8 seeds will get automatic home games (no bid necessary). The remaining 8 teams will play in the opening round and that round will likely still be determined with regionalization and bidding. That doesn't make it all the crazy though because you'll likely see the lower league AQ's and last at-larges in as the 8 in the opening round. You may see 1 or 2 CAA or SoCon teams, but I doubt any more than that.
I'd imagine you'd get the AQ's from OVC, NEC, PL, MEAC, and Big South, and occasionally the SLC (probably Texas State this year) and then either the last 2 or 3 at-larges in. Shouldn't be too difficult to get matchups from different leagues in the opening round.

What if the CAA gets 9 teams in in 2009?BeauFoster wrote:NCAA rules - no conference matchups in round one.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

is that even mathematically possible to get 9 of 12 teams with the requisite 7 D-I wins?UNI88 wrote:What if the CAA gets 9 teams in in 2009?BeauFoster wrote:NCAA rules - no conference matchups in round one.
Re: Playoff round one matchups
Has the NCAA officially announced that as the format for the 20-team playoff? (i.e. expanding to 8 seeds)danefan wrote:Everything changes for the 2010 season also. I would imgaine the "no conference matchups rule" may change to no conference matchups in the "opening round."

Sure it is. When the CAA has 20 teams, and the 2 good teams plus the 7 marginal teams play the 11 CRAPPY teams, they can all go 11-0.JayJ79 wrote:is that even mathematically possible to get 9 of 12 teams with the requisite 7 D-I wins?UNI88 wrote:

Re: Playoff round one matchups
I'm just curious how they will figure who the "bottom 8" are that have to play in the first week playoff games.GOKATS wrote:Good question...............I haven't seen anything.................They're only adding 4 teams (which I was opposed to), but why seed another 4 teams? I'll believe the format when I see something 'official'.
And it would make sense to have the top 4 seeds host the 4 winners of that first round of games, but who knows.
The more seeding they do, the less the NCAA can set up regional matchups (i.e. minimizing travel costs), and the less that bidding for home games comes into play (although sometimes I suspect that the determination of the seeds is affected by finances/bids and not just playing record).

They will still have regionalizatiion but it will be called seeding. It will not be too tough fro them to move a team up or down a spot to get the regional matchups they would prefer. Your suspicion seems fairly sound to me when you take a look at what was done in the past with seeding.JayJ79 wrote:I'm just curious how they will figure who the "bottom 8" are that have to play in the first week playoff games.GOKATS wrote:Good question...............I haven't seen anything.................They're only adding 4 teams (which I was opposed to), but why seed another 4 teams? According to the Sporting News the seeding will be the top 8.JayJ79 wrote:Has the NCAA officially announced that as the format for the 20-team playoff? No official NCAA release, but I suspect the Sporting News got that from somewhere official.
Re: Playoff round one matchups
Like I said earlier, I won't pay any attention to the 20 team playoff format until I see something 'official' from the NCAA (which will be extremely confusing and all fucked up).danefan wrote:According to the Sporting News the seeding will be the top 8.JayJ79 wrote:

Re: Playoff round one matchups
Why? The 20 team playoff format is set in stone. There are only a certain amount of possibilities. They have officially said there will be a an "opening round."GOKATS wrote:Like I said earlier, I won't pay any attention to the 20 team playoff format until I see something 'official' from the NCAA (which will be extremely confusing and all fucked up).danefan wrote:

Do you know how to run a 20 team bracket without putting 8 teams in the opening round and 12 getting "byes"?
It makes sense to seed 8, but even if you don't and only continue to seed 4, it doesn't change all that much.
There's only so many possibilities out there.
Re: Playoff round one matchups
It wouldn't surprise me if they only seeded the top 4 and the bottom 8.
Or perhaps the bottom 8 wouldn't be "seeded" exactly, but just have that group that "would be" seeds 13-20, just to determine who will play that first round, but then have those 4 games arranged via bids/geography just amongst those 8 teams.
At least I hope the first-round byes are awarded to the 12 best teams
