TOP 5 FBS TEAMS, THAT SHOULD BE PLACED IN FCS

Post by BlackFalkin »

Image
5. KENT STATE - Coming off a dissapointing 4-8 season, the Kent State Golden flashes, just dont have what it takes to be the best in the Mac, let alone being the best in the nation!

Image
4. TEMPLE - Temple has been a losing program for a long time, and there are no signs that things will be gettin better anytime soon. The lack of a true 'home' stadium is probably one of the many things keeping this weak program on its knees. A FCS football team is a great option for the program.

Image
3. NORTH TEXAS - In 2008 the Mean Green ranked last in their conference, winless in their conference & only managed to earn one win in the entire season. The called has to be made & needs to be made soon; & that is to stop trying to save face & move down to a sub-division where they can compete.... the FCS.

Image
2. UTAH STATE - Coming off a 3-9 season Utah state is making the state of Utah look bad & are making themselves look like complete losers. The program has good facilities, & could really dominate in the FCS.

Image
1. IDAHO - The vandals are in last place... again! They are also looked at, by the entire nation, as a joke. The once, Big Sky Conference powerhouse is now a terrible excuse for a FBS team. They have many setbacks including an outdated playing arena, very small stadium, & small budgets to name a few. As the bigsky comish told me, "theres something to be said about FCS conference & FCS National titles. hint.. hint..

I do realize its possible that non of these school will ever make the jump down to FCS, but facts are facts and the FCS could benefit alot of these horrible programs that are in denial.

Spot on with Idaho, especially.

I would add NM State to that list as well.

Idaho and Temple for sure.

Since Utah State is a local I know that they would mostly likely rather drop football than drop down.

As for North Texas they went to 4 straight bowl games this decade - 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, then only 8 wins in the past 4 seasons yikes.

If Brady Hoke can't turn San Diego State's football program around, they would be a great candidate for this list. :?

Idaho should be a shoe-in. Of those teams, I believe Utah State has the best potential. They've been successful in the past, there's no reason why they couldn't do it again. They have two guys that are regular NFL guys, Kevin Curtis and Chris Cooley. They're capable of producing NFL talent. North Texas is slumping, they've been good recently. If I remember right, they hired a successful TX high school coach to be their head coach.. is he still their coach? I don't know much about Kent St.. but seeing as they play in the MAC, that really isn't a great conference. New Mexico St... they need help. Anemic budget, horrible teams, and recruiting to Las Cruces probably isn't easy. Temple.. should drop football. If it wasn't for their basketball success they'd be totally of the college sports map.

Well, if I'm making a list of 5, it'd probably look like this:

1. Idaho
2. UL Monroe
3. Kent State
4. New Mexico State
5. Eastern Michigan

Perhaps you could add Utah State, UAB, or maybe even UL Lafayette to that list. I think you can make an economic case for Temple, but I'm one of the Owl's biggest defenders. :D From a MAC fan's perspective, I do think they're on the verge for big things as far as on-field production is concerned, but like the rest of the conference, pretty much everyone is having attendance problems. Western, Central, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, and Akron with the new stadium will be the only ones who really have solid attendance. Maybe Toledo.

If I'm calling teams up, it'd probably look like this:

1. Richmond (C-USA)
2. Montana (WAC)
3. Appalachian State (C-USA)
4. North Dakota State (MAC)
5. Central Arkansas (Sun Belt)

There are a number of teams at the FCS level that are just as capable of producing NFL talent. So I don't see that as a factor of determining subdivision.

I think it's more of a question of finances, facilities, and population/market.

For instance, I don't think UNI will ever be a suitable candidate for FBS because:
- they don't have the budget to cover 85 scholarships, nor the other added expenses of producing a team at the FBS level.
- The UNI-Dome isn't big enough (capacity-wise) for FBS games, and it's not really expandable.
- The market just isn't there to support another FBS team in Iowa. The team struggles to get 15K in the seats for games, much less what it would take to support FBS.

Not that anyone is mentioning UNI in that discussion, it's just the team I know.

What about Wyoming, I know they havent always been a dumbster team, but over the last few years, they have been the cellar dwellar of the MWC. Would anyone consider them a dropdown?

I second blueballs on FIU. A friend of mine knows someone who helps with the yard-makers at GSU home games. He said that while GSU was playing FIU in Statesboro in 2003, one of the FIU assistant coaches on the sideline said "why on earth aren't these guys in IA"? LoL  And that was the year GSU, Furman, and App. State all missed the playoffs. Shows them how unrealistic their expectations were.

I think you need to add Akron to the list. They aren't egregiously bad, but still pretty bad.

I've always been shocked at the lack of FCS teams in Florida... it's such a talent-rich area that you'd think a few schools would start up programs to take advantage... but there aren't many D-I's in the state without FBS as it is.

Miami
FIU (could go FCS)
FAU (could go FCS)
South Florida
Central Florida
UF
FSU
FAMU (already in FCS)
Jacksonville (non-schollie)
North Florida (commuter school at this point - but if the Jags leave, there will be talk of getting the Ospreys to FBS level I'm sure)
Bethune-Cookman (already in FCS)
Stetson (no football currently)
Florida-Gulf Coast (would be a great candidate in the Fort Meyers area)
North Dakota State University Bison 2011 and 2012 National Champions

They belong in FCS, but it will not happen. The Cowboys are Wyomings professional sports franchise, and they dig up the bucks to support it as if the entire state depended upon it. Outside of a couple tokens, very few residents get scholarships to Wyoming because they have to recruit in California, Texas, Colorado etc to try and compete in the MWC. Our Cowboys are the best that oil and coal can buy that are willing to go to school in the least attractive town/climate in the entire conference.

If they lose to Weber next week however, this all might change.

Why would Wyoming drop down? Their facilities are top of the line, they have a huge budget, and they've been more successful than not. A bad stretch doesn't make you drop down worthy, if that was the case there are quite a few teams ahead of them in line. Perennial bad teams, like the ones listed above are certainly worthy. FIU is certainly a mystery as they are in a recruiting rich environment but can't win. FAU is coming around though.

FAU is no where near going to FCS, they are a solid team. I know bowls don't mean much to most around here but they have been almost as successful as USF has been in a short period of time. FIU is making strides, they are getting there share of talent out of Miami.

They won't. I was just saying, that they belong in FCS. We can only pay for that program because our state is wealthy. UW is a small school that is having it's state foot the bill for big time athletics. All other sports aside, UW can not compete with the top half of the MWC. If I was being recruited by Utah and Wyoming, where would I go? How about CSU? UNLV? SDSU? Nothing is wrong with the program, or ex-coach Glenn, it's Laramie man, the dump of the conference.

As for FAU, they are hell and gone from small college football. New program a scant ten or so years ago, through the D-II, through FCS, and now a high profile FBS with big Howard at the helm. Pokes may not enjoy their trip down there later this fall.

Oddly, UM and UW are very similar in college size, so it always baffled me how UM hasn't measured up to UW considering the campuses are so similar. Laramie does suck, but it couldn't be as bad as Provo or Albuquerque! I think they can compete in the top of the MWC, they've done it before, and they'll do it again at some point. They used to top of the mountain in the WAC along with BYU.

I have the same feelings about FAU.. might be a long day for the Cowboys, FAU is a good opponent. I think the Pokes odds of beating them in Laramie would be much greater than in Boca Raton.

Why is that funny? :?

Last time I checked, North Dakota State whipped the 2006 MAC champions. They have some potential as a program, but it's not like I'm familiar with their athletic budget though.

It's a little too early to judge Florida International. They actually had a good season in 2008 by their standards and went 5-6 in 2005 (the year right before they went to hell recordwise). I agree with Tampajag, FAU has no intention of dropping down. They're fixated on overthrowing Troy as the conference power in the Sun Belt.
