College Football Pre-Game Handshake
I'm all for good sportsmanship...but what is behind the NCAA's thinking on this...it's only for the first week right now...

The MVFC teams do this before every game...well at least in CF they do.
Re: College Football Pre-Game Handshake
I don't see any reason NOT to do it.

Coaches are endorsing this as well. Trial to see how it goes...

I think it will be cool and I'm with you on being all for sportsmanship thing. The article says it's not mandatory and it might look pretty cool to see the two teams lined up en masse to shake before the game.Col Hogan wrote:I'm all for good sportsmanship...but what is behind the NCAA's thinking on this...it's only for the first week right now...

I've been thinking about it since I first posted it...the story was a bit of a "huh" when I first saw it...the more I think about it, it's a good idea...Ursus A. It will be interesting to see how many teams do it....and which ones don't (if any)...

Me be tha lone disinter herrr. Tha crewmen be in tha ZONE b'fore tha game an dat be takin frum em. Tha crews' Captains shake thy hands and parlay at midfield an then tha crews return fur battle. Tis how it be, an how it shall remain. Ta force tha crews to shake hands be forced sportmanship an nay tha real thing.
It be weak. Next thin' ye know we be serving crewmen cookies an Kool-aid after tha game. Arrgg.

Yup, it's in the MVFC Procedures (pdf).
4.8.4 Pre-Game Team Handshake. A pre-game team handshake shall be conducted prior to every conference game as follows:
a. The ceremonial pre-game coin toss shall be conducted at 1:30 on the clock.
b. When the captains go to midfield for the coin toss, all remaining team members shall assemble along the hash marks.
c. Following administration of the coin toss, the head coaches and teams shall meet at midfield for the pre-game handshake.
d. Players shall not wear, but may carry, their helmets during the team handshake.
e. A standard public address announcement shall be provided by the conference office for announcement preceding the team handshake.

Real enemies try to kill you. Your job is to kill them first.
I understand the "zone" concept, but even if the handshake is pro forma, it serves the purpose to remind us that the other team is not the enemy.

I love Ahad and all that he brings but I suppose when you're talking to a guy with a hook you need to be sensitive about the handshake conversations. If I had to put a finger on it I'd say it's a touchy subject. I've got to hand it to the guy though.

Dear Ahab, sorry for previous misspelling. I also apologize for confusing my pirates and so forth but you all look alike to me.Captain Ahab wrote:They call me Ahab. If I see your fish I will send a carrier pigeon to apprise you of it's whereabouts and will be expecting a deposit of the gold you promise in my paypal account.
The "in your face" was directed at my friend from Delaware that goes by the name BlueHen 86, not at yeself. The puns were not for naught, you see BH rolls out as many as he can as quickly and humorously as they can be. They don't have to be funny but it helps if they are at least somewhat related to the subject at hand and since I got one in before BH got the chance to start laying dozens of them out there, well, I wanted to let him know.
It's nice to see a sensitive Pirate though so keep up the good work (knuckle down if you will) but don't take it so hard.

I prefer the hockey playoff post-game handshake. What's the sense of wishing an opponent good luck beforehand, when you don't really mean it? I'm just a warmonger at heart, I guess.

Re: College Football Pre-Game Handshake
It's a game, not war (fuck you Ray Lewis, you're not going to war on the football field, and you're not a warrior). So I have no problem with some required handshaking. If anything, it'll encourage some good ol' fashioned face-to-face smack talk!
More entertainment for us.

I take no offense, Ahab, but I take no pills, either.
I played football when I was younger, then spent 25 years in a profession which required me to be prepared to kill other human beings.
There is a difference. So if you are on my field, you will shake fvcking hands.

Re: College Football Pre-Game Handshake
if boxers can touch gloves (the equivalent of a handshake) before proceeding to impart brain damage on each other, I don't see why football players cannot.
