We Need a New President...

When something is approaching zero, it’s bound to slow…unless you believe it could go negative? And given your lack of understanding of economic principles, you probably DO think it could go negative.

I wrote that it's reasonable to say that the unemployment rate slowed because it was getting so low and not because of Trump. But the point is there is no indication that the trend towards lower unemployment was because of Trump either. I won't repeat the numbers again because we've been over them many time. But the unemployment rate had been declining for many years after peaking in 2010. The start of the trend did not coincide in any way with Trump taking office. No sensible person looking at the data would say Trump was the reason for the fact that the unemployment rate "plummeted."

Explain to me again why over 10,000,000 jobs go unfilled while millions collect unemployment? Given the # of jobs out there, we could almost wipe out unemployment, except (wait for it) PRESIDENTIAL POLICIES encourage people to NOT work. So yeah, I’d say it was something Trump DID, and Biden ISN’T doing, that drove down unemployment. And kept driving it down to historically low levels (particularly among minorities and women).

What the heck I will post it again. See graph below. The triangular marker indicates the point at which Trump took office. There is no indication, at all, that the rate changed at that point. If one is going to say the unemployment rate plummeted, the start of the plummet was clearly well before Trump took office. It's just ridiculous for people to keep saying that Trump "caused" declining unemployment. It really is.

Agree to disagree. I don’t see big business and big government as different. You can’t manipulate government without access. Trump had plenty of access even if he’d never held office.

I think that business and government are VERY different. I don't think one should want to have someone with no experience in government as President than they should want to have someone with no experience in business be Exxon CEO. I think they are completely different realms.

Business is driven by the profit motive. Government is not. A Government executive is constrained by rules that a private business executive is not; and I think rightly so.

I have always completely disagreed with the popular notion that government should be run like a business and that a businessman would make a good government chief executive. Government is NOT a business.

And a business is constrained by rules that a govt executive is not; Business has to operate with fiscal restraint. The govt executive doesn’t, as they have an endless fucking $$$ pit, and almost no incentive for fiscal restraint. Need more $$$? Just tax more. Still need more? Just print more.

Whether what Biden is doing causes rising unemployment is a different question. What I"m talking about is what was happening BEFORE Trump took office. And it's clear that the trend was firmly in place before Trump took office. No reasonable person would look at that graph without the marker showing when Trump took office and say it looks like something happened in early 2016 to change the trend.

I'll have to look up women but the same thing is true of Black unemployment. See graph below. There is just no way any REASONABLE person would say it looks like something happened around the beginning of 2017 to change the trend.

Thankfully as of next Mon (Labor Day ironically) that is no more. 7.5 million will lose their extended, enhanced unemployment. They can them get off their asses and fill some of those 9+ million jobs that are unfilled.

A little anecdotal evidence of people sitting on unemployment - we had to lay off some people before the PPP loans were a thing in early 2020, and once we applied for the PPP loan we contacted everyone we decided to lay off (about 7 people - we're a small company) and only two of them came back, and the rest didn't even reply to us. In the past week I've had 2 of the folks that didn't reply back then call me and ask if we were hiring because they really enjoyed working here and wanted to come back. No way this is related to the extra unemployment ending......is it???

It may work like that for SOME people, but out here in Cali, it's more complicated. The Newsom Administration, particularly his EDD, was woefully unprepared for the pandemic. Most unemployed people can't even get in because EDD won't even bother to answer the phone. When people DO get in, they find idiots answering the phones. Honest people are rejected because of fears of fraud (they HAVE given illegal benefits to people in the brig). One person will deny someone, and another will wipe out the denial, often with no real explanation to the person who's waiting months for back benefits. It's a real nightmare to be unemployed out here. But that whole "I can make more on unemployment" mentality has stuck in people's heads so much that employers not offering much put up signs saying that they're closed certain days of the week because "people don't want to work." No, they don't want to work for the pittance you're offering.

Yet another reason to get rid of one of the most corrupt governors in the history of California....
