His title is being actively challenged as we speak.

I’m actually glad Jimmy Carter has lived to see himself dethroned twice in as many years.

They've had a space program since at least the 70s at Vandenberg. I'd guess its similar to the SR-71 situation - the fastest known plane to ever fly and it was built in the 60s. The engineers havent been sitting still since then - look how much different cars are now from the ones in the 60s even though they look pretty much the same. Of course I can't prove it, but I don't have any doubt that we have all kinds of stuff right out of he Jetsons. They have a laser cannon mounted on a naval ship now and if they can't already it won't be long before we'll have the ability to drop rocks on "problem areas", nuclear level impacts with no nuclear fallout.

That maybe true but I highly doubt it is a version of a "space plane", everything I have ever read on those types of projects both government documents and the conspiracy nuts, they are all land based and while they may touch the upper reaches of the atmosphere, they are not long term space capable.

There is a massive difference in sending up a robot spaceship like the x-37b and a human.

I do my best to deal in the realm of facts and if there is a black project ala Project Aurura or something like it that is actually space capable it would of leaked by now. There are too many systems both government and private (and amateur) that would of caught a flight that was destined to have escape velocity.

Unless there really are aliens and they gave us cloaking technology. :coffee:

There aren't any aliens and we already have cloaking technolgy that works at optical wavelengths. I'm not trying to convince you of anything except you'd be very wrong to think that the whiz kids have been sitting still for 60 years.

The Air Force has a whole constellation of its own satellites and Peeping Tom equipment and there are literally trillions of dollars that the Pentagon seems to have misplaced over the years.

I do not disagree with the above.

My comments were strictly along the line of long term space travel (which was my initial debate with Ibanez). If the "whiz kids" have people in space already it would be a monumental break through and a few trillion dollars into one program might be enough to do it. The SLS is already around 20 billion and expected cost per launch is 2 billion.

I do not underestimate the government at hiding stuff but to do a full human space launch program isn't something you can do out of some random building somewhere (not even Area 51).

Satellites and planes, sure. Human's in orbit, doubtful.

I have read some very interesting books on declassified Cold War R&D and one individual that was in charge with doing the black budget reports to the people that needed them, was quoted with saying that some research would come up with an idea and they would try to follow it. A few billion dollars later they would find out that it would not work. This was repeated many times over trying to push the boundaries and trillions of dollars were burnt through in R&D that went no where. No every now and then something did work out, which they then tested in Area 51. ;)

Lost of good points up there, WB. Allow me to correct myself and add a note:

1) I'm an idiot.
The USSF was established within the Department of the Air Force

2 - I don't believe that space travel is their mission. It appears to be more C4i or C5i. In the future that will probably change but for now, it appears we're building / improving our defensive posture using space as a battleground. Orbital warfare, at this time, is hypothetical. We aren't at Star Wars levels yet.

To your first point, we all know that already. :kisswink:

To your second point, I agree it is not that now and since that is not the case, the USAF makes a better case for being in charge than the Navy. I was just trying to think ahead long term and avoid a bureaucratic mess that will be sure to happen.

Actually the only thing limiting Orbital Warfare right now is the payload cost to put something into orbit (think it is $10k/pound last I looked). Once that becomes cheaper, the KE bombardment aka "Rods from God" side of things becomes a very real possibility. We have the ability currently to control such a projectile to hit within a very close area, at least close enough that it will not matter if you miss by a bit.

Lost of good points up there, WB. Allow me to correct myself and add a note:

1) I'm an idiot.

I was just trying to think ahead long term and avoid a bureaucratic mess that will be sure to happen.

could we spend some of that money and drop a rod from God onto the presidential palace in Kabul?
