No comments on the Afghanistan implosion? I wonder if this ends up with helicopters picking the remnants of whatever American contingent is left off the rooftop of the embassy. Another crisis under the Biden* admin.

In the end, Afghanistan will get whatever government the people in Afghanistan want to have. Sure, it's going to be hell on earth in Afghanistan for the people who will suffer under the Taliban - women in particular are going to again be systematically corralled and basically enslaved under a Taliban regime. But in the end, it's the people of Afghanistan who decide how their country is going to be going forward, and unfortunately they appear to be going the way of the Taliban. If they want something better than that then they'll have to be the ones stepping up and making it happen. It's a shame but it's what it is.

How China and Afghanistan/The Taliban work together is going to be interesting. Influence in Afghanistan gives China even more control over rare earths. Will the Taliban accept the conditions (ignoring the plight of the Uyghurs for one) of Chinese aid?

Thank god this war is ending (I was a child when it started).

Too bad everyone died in vain. Fuck every politician involved including Biden. Fuck OBL. Fuck the military industrial complex. Fuck the suicide pilots. Fuck the CIA. Fuck the Taliban. Fuck everyone involved.

Unfortunately I don't think this is the last we'll see of the seeds we sowed 20 years ago. Future generations will suffer from this monument to America's early 21st century failure.

Military conquest enforced by terror and free elections are not quite the same. But if you’re saying that the Afghans get to “decide” their future without outside interference (cough China cough), I take your point.

And as bad as it is, you have to throw the Afghan people in there too. The Taliban aren't invaders from outer space, they draw a lot of support (or at least don't draw resistance from) the Afghan people themselves. I imagine mostly the Afghan male population, because like I said, it's about to become hell on Earth again for any females in Afghanistan, but we spent 20 years and like you said, thousands of lives, trying to teach them to not be medieval barbarians and apparently it was all for naught, as it will be the same as it was 20 years ago. I'm not sure what more America could do.

Is China driving the Taliban? This is the same Taliban that ran the place before we got there 20 years ago. They just waited it out and are right back to ruling with terror.

There are plenty of countries that throw off the saddle of tyranny because they decide they don't want to live that way anymore. I'm not saying it's easy, and I'm not saying it doesn't come with potentially a lot of sacrifice, but good countries exist because the citizens in that country demand it and will fight for it. For all of our foibles and sins as a country, we fought a Revolution to get the country we want and then we fought a Civil War to keep that country and to improve it. If you want a country where females aren't treated as property and/or slaves, then you might need to stand up for that principle. Easy for me to say behind a computer, and as a beneficiary of people in this country dying for me to have this country, but show me how I'm wrong.

The pullout is ugly (that's what she said) and Biden* totally botched it, but it's been long past due to get the fuck out. The sad part is anyone left behind that helped the US in any form is going to be liquidated by the Taliban. All that pain and suffering is on Biden*.

Oh and

I listened to an honorably-discharged soldier on our local talk radio station this afternoon. The young man gave a very moving explanation of why the US has to help the Afghan interpreters, translators, and their families get out of there before they are slaughtered by the Taliban. Analogies were made to the fate of theMontagnards in Viet Nam, but this will be orders of magnitude worse. Our troops relied on them for intel as well as communication, and they were together in many a hot zone. Just another thing for Biden and Congress to consider now, while the US withdraws its own military and diplomatic personnel.

Exactly why I say that you can’t draw too many parallels on matters of self-determination between these two starkly different cultures/countries. I don’t call the Taliban freedom fighters, akin to 1776 American rebels. Do you?

Sounds like Biden* is going to fvck a lot of those people over. The Taliban bloodletting will be massive.
The Biden administration is broadening the opportunity for Afghans affiliated with the U.S. war effort, the U.S. government or U.S. media organizations to permanently resettle in the United States — citing ramped up violence by the Taliban as the reason for the expansion.

But unlike a parallel effort to evacuate and resettle endangered interpreters, these newly eligible Afghans must receive a referral from a current or former employer before the State Department can begin processing their cases. And crucially, they are also responsible for getting themselves and their families out of Afghanistan and into a third country without any U.S. assistance.

Not at all, I'm actually arguing the other way and that there should be a groundswell of Afghans who rise up and resist the Taliban, assuming that they want to resist the Taliban.

If they're not willing to resist then it must not be that important to them. And if it isn't that important to them, why should we spend American blood and money trying to do it for them.
