PT Barnum strikes again!

But, what ever works. With money as tight as it is apparently all of the new buyers will be able to make the payments.

Somehow I just can't shake the thought that this sounds a lot like a smaller version of enticing people to buy things they cannot afford.

Maybe it's just me.

Pretty sure it's not just you.

What's cool though is that if some of us get in early enough before a bail out to cover car payments we may get some great deals on some slightly used automobiles. :thumb:

I hadn't thought of that side of the equation. I might want a new car in the future. How long do you think it will be before some of these almost new automobiles are back on the market?

I'm betting that an honest effort to make payments will last for close to a year and with job losses and so forth there should be a good supply of slightly used cars with 5-10K on them in a year's time.

Wow. You ARE naive, aren't you?

a) 10-15% of these car "owners" won't make the first payment
b) after a year, these cars will have 75-80K miles on them. Guaranteed.

Humorous waffle, to be clear. Hey, Myself and D1B are the only fvckers here who give credit when an antagonist has a good point. The rest of us, Conk and Donk, haven't that ability, including you, Merle.

Fvck you, and what did I tell you about contradictin' me in front of my friends?

But, I'll grant it to you, nonetheless, and rephrase: D1B and I give credit, by far, the most frequently on this board.

point A is largely accurate... however, that was the case before and will be the case after the program... the only thing this program really changes is 1) getting people to turn in their 1988 conversion van and 1994 suburban for a fuel efficient vehicle and 2) by putting 4500 toward their purchase, may lower their monthly payments to where they are sustainable for more people.

if you want to have a discussion about foolish lending practices - that's a largely separate topic that exists well outside this program

On the news last night they said 2% of the dealers have been paid by Big Brother.

Good news was that Senator Klobachar got a repreive for Minnesotan's that were rejected because they paid for their tabs during the 10 day grace period.

The ten most traded-in cars under the cash-for-clunkers program are:
10) '99 Dodge Caravan
9) '97 Ford Windstar
8) '94 Ford Explorer
7) '95 Ford Explorer
6) Jeep Cherokee
5) Jeep Grand Cherokee
4) '99 Ford Explorer
3) '96 Ford Explorer
2) '97 Ford Explorer
1) '98 Ford Explorer

The ten new car models being purchased under cash-for-clunkers are:
10) Chevy Cobalt
9) Honda Fit
8) Hyundai Elantra
7) Dodge Caliber
6) Toyota Camry
5) Ford Escape
4) Toyota Prius
3) Toyota Corolla
2) Honda Civic
1) Ford Focus

So, the biggest POS on the road by miles is the Explorer!

That's kind of what I thought of them back in '90 when I went suv shopping.
