I'm betting that an honest effort to make payments will last for close to a year and with job losses and so forth there should be a good supply of slightly used cars with 5-10K on them in a year's time.

point A is largely accurate... however, that was the case before and will be the case after the program... the only thing this program really changes is 1) getting people to turn in their 1988 conversion van and 1994 suburban for a fuel efficient vehicle and 2) by putting 4500 toward their purchase, may lower their monthly payments to where they are sustainable for more people.

if you want to have a discussion about foolish lending practices - that's a largely separate topic that exists well outside this program
