White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci that the chances of scientists creating a highly effective vaccine — one that provides 98% or more guaranteed protection — for the virus are slim.

Scientists are hoping for a coronavirus vaccine that is at least 75% effective, but 50% or 60% effective would be acceptable, too, he said.

The FDA has said it would authorize a coronavirus vaccine so long as it is safe and at least 50% effective. .
Fauci has previously said he worries about the “durability” of a coronavirus vaccine, saying if Covid-19 acts like other coronaviruses, it may not provide long-term protection.

I don't understand the trail of all of those Fauci quotes - although, in his defense, he says so much anymore that he's likely to contradict himself after awhile. But it's basically saying that a really good vaccine is unlikely, and whatever vaccine we get won't be very long lasting. So what the heck is the plan forward? We want to cancel everything until we have a good vaccine, but now he's saying we'll never really have a good vaccine. That's a fairly gloomy path forward.

Not as big of an outlier as you'd think.

Report: At Least 10 Big Ten Football Players Have Heart Condition Myocarditis
ROB GOLDBERG
AUGUST 11, 2020
One major factor that led to the Big Ten announcing the postponement of the 2020 fall sports season, including college football, was the long-term effects of the coronavirus.

According to Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic, the conference is aware of at least 10 players who have the rare heart condition myocarditis, which reportedly has a high prevalence in people who have had COVID-19.

This is considered an "alarmingly high number" of the rare condition caused by viruses and it has caused decision-makers across college athletics to reconsider their views, per Auerbach.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez is out for the MLB season because of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart, which occurred after he contracted the coronavirus.

Indiana offensive lineman Brady Feeney was sent to the emergency room with breathing problems after testing positive for COVID-19.

Although the risk of hospitalization and death are lower for 18-29-year-olds who get the coronavirus compared to older individuals, there are still negative consequences resulting from the virus that has led to over 160,000 deaths in the United States, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren acknowledged the risks involved during Tuesday's announcement:

"The mental and physical health and welfare of our student-athletes has been at the center of every decision we have made regarding the ability to proceed forward. As time progressed and after hours of discussion with our Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee, it became abundantly clear that there was too much uncertainty regarding potential medical risks to allow our student-athletes to compete this fall."

The Pac-12 also postponed its season, citing concerns from the Pac-12 Medical Advisory Committee that include "potential serious cardiac side effects in elite athletes."

And relying on that means you have to wonder if the conferences will ever be able to play sports again. Fauci has already raised the spectre that a vaccine, if we get one, won't be anywhere close to 100% effective. You have to wonder how many of these cases college sports will be able to stomach if the vaccine is only in the 50%-60% range where it's likely to be, and also with the consideration that the vaccine won't likely to give immunity more than a few months or so. We keep postponing until we get this magical vaccine, when all indications are on the science end of things that there is no such thing as a magical vaccine.

That's helpful short term, but nothing really changes without the vaccine, and a real good one. Even places where the infection rate is under control aren't going to accept the risks of someone potentially getting the virus and then potentially having the after-effects.

Vaccine will take care of half the people, the other half will tell you to stick the vaccine in the mask and flush it. The Vaccine will help get us to herd immunity though, between the people that have had covid and the people that are vaccinated.

Assuming that both the vaccine and immunity has any staying time. If COVID mutates as fast as the flu or even a bit slower, a vaccine is not going to do much. I believe there are six distinct strains of the virus right now, though a vaccine may cover more than one strain.

True, and how long does immunity last, 6 months, 1 year or longer.

I think by the time a vaccine comes out (Russian one aside) we will have at least a bit better handle on the life cycle of COVID and the direction it is going.
