From Dr. Birx during the Task Force conference going on right now:

After thanking the EU community for sharing data, she offered the following stats:
No person under the age of 15 has died in Europe
1% of fatalities in Europe are under the age of 50
99% of fatalities in Europe are over the age of 50 and most have pre-existing conditions (many with at least 3 conditions)

I heard men are more at risk, 2-1 ratio over women. Did they mention anything about that?

I think the fact that nobody reacted to those other things like they're reacting to this should give you pause. China did not act like it did in this case for no reason. It's not a regime that gives a shit about what the media say (well, except that they crush the media if they say something the regime doesn't like). And it's never done anything like that before. What's going on in Italy is not normal. It's never been seen before.

I think questioning whether we over reacted is legitimate. But there is something going on with this that is causing governments to react in ways they've never reacted. Also there is something going on with this in Italy that is very atypical. This is not something anything close to what happens there with the typical seasonal flu.

I think you should consider the possibility that an awful lot of people are seeing this as potentially worse than SARS, H1N1, and Ebola in terms of overall impact. The Chinese didn't take the draconian measures they took just for fun. And the Italians aren't experiencing something that happens every year.
Fair points. Still doesn't justify destruction of a country or the global economy.

And Italy's atypical response has pretty much been explained already. Population skewed towards the elderly, less than ideal living conditions with multiple generations under one roof.
I think it's fair to say that Italy's age distribution, crowded conditions, etc., impacts the severity. But the point is that it is atypical. Italy is impacted by the seasonal flu every year. In fact Italy was experiencing a large number of flu cases this season. See https://www.thelocal.it/20200123/flu-ou ... -in-a-week.

But the flu clearly didn't put the kind of stress on their system as this thing is putting on it. The linked article says there were 2.8 million flu cases confirmed by testing as of when it was published. But there were only 240 flu related deaths.

Now, with only 64 thousand confirmed COVID-19 cases in that country they have over 6,000 deaths related to that. This is not typical. It's hitting them a lot harder than the flu does.

And I do think the China thing is compelling. China flipping shut down a significant portion of its own economy to arrest this thing. It did not mess around. I don't think China does that sort of thing just for the heck of it.

BTW the United States, in spite of having limited testing as compared to other countries, is now at #3 in total cases among nations. Also, for at least the last two days it has had the largest number of new cases among nations. You can use the sortable table at https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/, for instance, to see that the United States had 9,359 new cases yesterday and has 9,883 today.

Italy had 5,560 new cases yesterday and has 4,789 so far today.

Another BTW for people trying to downplay the significance of what's going on: Only 839 US cases have been resolved. By that I mean they have either recovered or died. 295 have recovered. 545 have died.

Now, I think that as time goes on that will start looking a lot better. But this is not the seasonal flu. If it does get into the total case numbers that the seasonal flu typically gets into it's going to be a lot worse than the seasonal flu. And it certainly has the potential to get into the total case numbers that the seasonal flu does because it is very contagious.

Guys, there are a lot of people in the United States over 50. Also, one of the pre-existing conditions is hypertension. About a third of US adults have hypertension.

A little more insight on which American people the Republicans are sending it to....

“But one thing is extremely clear: Large American corporations are not in immediate jeopardy. Despite the recent stock market crash, we are not currently experiencing a financial crisis ― a breakdown of the credit system in which healthy companies cannot obtain loans to continue operations. With the Federal Reserve’s announcement on Monday that it would be providing unprecedented, direct support to both small business and large corporations, the central bank ensured that firms can get access to government-backed loans with no strings attached.

The Fed has never done anything like this. Usually the Fed supports banks, not manufacturers, airlines, hotels and retailers. But the American central bank recognized the scope of this crisis and acted accordingly.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) holds a news conference after the Senate voted to acquit President Donald Trump on the two articles of impeachment brought by the House of Representatives to the Senate for trial on Capitol Hill on February 5, 2020 in Washington, D.C (Photo: Samuel Corum via Getty Images)

More
Given the Fed’s support, there is no excuse for the corporate bailout legislation that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are pursuing. It offers too little help to the people who need it most, and outrageous gifts to monopolists, billionaires and corporate deadbeats. Republican leaders are demanding $500 billion to distribute as Mnuchin sees fit, with no disclosure for six months, no curbs on executive compensation, no limits on shareholder giveaways, no requirements to retain workers, and no meaningful oversight mechanisms. The public would receive no share in the upside to its investment. If companies on public support go bust, we eat the losses. If they prosper, we don’t even get an interest payment.

It’s ridiculous. The terms McConnell and Mnuchin want are substantially worse than those included in the infamous 2008 bank bailout bill. The last go-round, we at least got to know where the money went. The GOP wants a blank check, to be kept secret for six months.”

https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/republic ... 24095.html
I don't like what the Republicans are doing either that's why I posted "The Dems could take the high ground on this if they focused on protecting workers but they've added so many unrelated requirements to the bailout that they've proven once again that they're just as bad as the Republicans."

I didn't take a Republicans are good and Democrats are bad (or vice versa) approach. Both sides are looking to take advantage of this crisis to feather the nests of their supporters and both sides should be caned.

I guess we need to pass it so we can see what’s in it... :)

Btw...I liked the use of “caned” vs. “canned”.

NPR was reporting that if hypertension was under control and there were no other pre-existing conditions, the results were better.

Agreed - the Dems had a chance to ride this thing out and let Trump be his own worst enemy, but they couldn't stop themselves from screwing this up and they jump right into crapper with this one. When Trump gets another 4 years to run this thing this could very well be the moment that Dems look back on for when exactly they screwed it up. All they had to do was get money to the American people and they couldn't even do that. :ohno:
It’s 2020-D Chess by the Reps to make the Dems shoot themselves in the foot and take the heat off of the Trump administrations ineptitude and tepid response.

Things Democrats want in their relief bill:
-Publication of corporate pay statistics by race and race statistics for all corporate boards
-A bail out on all current debt at the Postal Service
-Required early voting
-Required same day voter registration
-Provisions on official time for union collective bargaining
-Full offset of airline emissions by 2025
-Publication and reporting of greenhouse gas statistics for individual flights
-Retirement plans for community newspaper employees
-Federal $15 minimum wage
-Permanent paid leave
What the hell does most of this have to do with getting through the pandemic? :?
I think donks are going to pay a political price for this.
Why?
