I'm with you but my man you just don't understand the sleeping giant that UC Davis is/has been and it might be time to add them (fairly soon) to the list of what we expect reps the good days.
I don't care what the names are on the marquee those teams mentioned as nobodies are as good as the teams of the past for the most part that would pop up for a few years and then go away. Talent is spread around pretty well now for sure.
But I am completely on board with your sentiment and hope it comes back like that.
If memory serves, Davis had a lot of success in D2 so they have the foundation to build on and become a major player in FCS.
I don't think the division is as bad off as the cranky old Hen fans do but it would be better if Montana, Delaware, etc. were prominent programs again.

No doubt it's different and 3-8 is probably not going to happen, more like 6-6 or 7-5. A great O-line will only get you so far. Having a good QB is also important as you know. The RB stable is deep, but the #1 is injury prone, after that you have a former WR, another had an ACL a couple years ago, and a R-Freshman. The guy with 195 yards against SHSU in the playoffs, is out for the year with an ACL. They have good potential, but FCS is tough week after week. Last years to receiver just caught a TD for Green Bay last night, and I don't see anyone at that level stepping up this year. It will be tough for a defensive oriented coach to take over this offense and keep the train rolling.
That system creates efficiency in QB’s. The pre-snap motion and misdirection confuses coverages and tends to get WR’s wide open allowing for easy throws.
The rushing game also pulls more defenders up into run support as the game wears on.
A bad year on defense would be giving up 15 ppg.
All of this leads to QB’s not having to fit a throw into tight spaces as often and/or win games with their arm. It’s about as good as you can get for easing someone into that position.
The offense controlling the ball, aka Time of possession, has a lot to do with the defensive ppg given up.

Entz is the big question in my opinion. Klieman's a helluva coach and UNI missed him. I'm not sure you can say the same thing about Entz.
He came into UNI with that 2009-2012 defensive line already built for him. That defensive line got better and deeper after he left.
Klieman, OTOH, was a massive loss
I don't think the loss of him will be super felt this year, or next, but his not leading recruiting and hyper controlling all aspects of that program like he did will start to show as his older recruits (this year's SRs JRs/rSo) are gone.
I don't think it's death, but the dynasty probably cease to be what it has been.

How did I miss these two Eeyore posts!
I am so rooting for the Hens and Griz this year.
(Never mind the increased level of talent...Nichols State passing the eyeball test, 1st round draft pick, 5 players from one FCS school on an NFL roster, a MEAC winning 3 FBS games in three seasons, etc...)

I suspect Gil believes if NDSU dominates under 3 consecutive head coaches that the argument about the competitive state of the FCS might be over.
I mean, I admit I thought there'd be regression after Bohl left (like so many programs when they make an internal hire after a coach that did a lot moves on) but then Klieman takes over and he goes to K State with the highest career win percentage of any DI head coach. History pretty much shows even for teams with elite FCS talent it's hard to maintain dominance through coaching changes.
NDSU was average to bad at the full FCS level under Bohl. They weren't good until Klieman showed up.
We'll see how Entz handles being the HC now with Klieman gone.
The only years I can remember them not being good was 2008 and 2009.
Klieman wasn't there for the semifinal run in 2010 or the national championship in 2011. And people forget they were really good in 2006 and 2007 before they finished their transition as well.

He was there in 2011.
In 05 and 07 they were playing transitional and some real bad teams in the great west. Notice how once they hit full scholarship ball they fell hard.
Bohl was nearly fired. If they didn't get the draw they did in 2010 Bohl gets fired.
I repeat they had negative 42 yards rushing against UNI IN 2010.

Delaware's had five players on NFL rosters simultaneously many times (and of course we've had a first round draft pick, and even a second round pick for good measure this year). When was that a big deal? Hell, we'll probably have close to ten players on rosters by the time the cuts are made this year. I'm assuming 2nd rounder Nasir Adderly will stick in LAC. That adds to Flacco, Nick Boyle with the Ravens, Zach Kerr with the Broncos, Bilal Nichols with the Bears, Paul Worrilow with the Eagles. Then we have rookies Adewusi (Giants), Reeder (Rams), Scarff (Ravens), and Walker (Bears) all still vying for spots. And did Mike Adams finally retire? Pops has had a long career.
My point here: don't let stats fool you. Delaware is loaded with NFL talent, and yet we suck as a team.
The UNI game was on the road the week after, what at that time was the attention grabbing and remarkable upset of Kansas 6-3. It was a brutal physical defensive battle that the Bison clearly won.
The Bison had a good offense scoring over 30 five times and over 40 twice. They went to the playoffs but lost to the replay booth at EWU.
2010 was, and is normally recognized as, the first year of the 4th Bison dynasty,

1). That’s because the subdivision is better than ever.
2). Did you ever have 5 players on the SAME NFL roster?

I'm not really sure who you might mean by "people forget" but I seriously doubt many people around here or at AGS forgot. Hell, without google I can still name a lot of starters from those teams. And I bet I wouldn't place in the T10 in a trivia contest with some of the mofo's here and on AGS.

Genuinely curious because I don't know the answer. Which FCS school had five simultaneously on a single 53 man roster? Who were the players? That's a really neat accomplishment to make up 10% of an NFL team's roster, if it actually happened.

Most Griz had (I believe) at one time was three on the Dolphins when Wilson, Tripp & Carpenter were all there. Not sure if Proctor was there at that time or not.
And these were all on the ACTIVE roster.

I didn’t say 53 man roster.
But right now the Rams have two starters in Kupp and Ebukam, Aaron Neary who they pulled off the practice squad and started a couple times last season and rookies Kettner Kupp and Nsimba Webster are in camp.

We had like 12 a decade ago. Now it's probably zero.

The question was on the SAME roster. Try and keep up.
Not 5 on a roster - but multiples across the board
I forgot LJ Fort
David Johnson - Arizona
Xavier Williams - Kansas City (was with DJ in Arizona for 2 years before that)
Makinton Dorleant - Kansas City
Dieondre Hall - Philly
LJ Fort - Philly
Daurice Fountain - Indy
Austin Howard - Indy (finished year with Washington after Scherf went down with an injury)
The Manure Pile at #3 is bogus. By the end of the season, Sac will be in the Top 25, and the Manure Pile will be OUT....

Klieman helped NDSU go 6-0 against FBS schools this decade. Doubt they beat K-State or Iowa with another coach.
