If there is no funding for the wall/fence/barrier/whatever, why would McConnell take it up? Heard someone on the radio say that basically the wall funding Trump is requesting in the Fed budget is equivalent to a household income of $44k looking at a $57 fee/bill.

Just checked the Yahoo headlines on their main page and not one article at the top of the queue on the shutdown. So time to ask this question: when the average person stops giving a fuck about the shutdown (because it largely doesn't impact them), how long before they start asking why we even need these people on the dole?

**** happens on the bays (and ocean) around here frequently in the summer. Weekend warriors get caught in pop up t-storms. But you already knew that. :thumb:
In Charleston, when some numbskull would get in trouble and then holler for the Coasties, we always assumed they were from up around the Chesapeake

Weekenders should know to put in a reef or two when they see that thunderstorm coming

I stand by my assumption that they are left lane campers

probably talk on their cellphones in elevators too ... and use words like irregardless

There are a lot of us at State who are excepted but unpaid. There's a big conference that SecState is organizing for the newly confirmed ambassadors in DC. Many officers are having to organize it and they aren't being paid-

Executive appointees are excepted and always paid, so the ambassadors are paid

I am excepted, and paid - in theory... but about half of the folks in Charleston at CGFS are furloughed... so if the guy who clicks the mouse to pay me isn't there....

No joke, That’s my uncle. He’s been at State for over 20 yrs. He runs that local dept. All embassy and consulate funding is handled in Charleston.

As so many proud Republicans here have proclaimed with a smirk on their face, "non-essential!"

Yeah, non-essential:
The Trump administration on Tuesday said it has called back tens of thousands of federal workers to fulfill key government tasks, including disbursing tax refunds, overseeing flight safety and inspecting the nation’s food and drug supply, as it seeks to blunt the impact of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

The nearly 50,000 furloughed federal employees are being brought back to work without pay — part of a group of about 800,000 federal workers who are not receiving paychecks...

All without pay. This is a disgrace for the Republican party. :ohno:

WASHINGTON — The partial government shutdown is inflicting far greater damage on the United States economy than previously estimated, the White House acknowledged on Tuesday, as President Trump’s economists doubled projections of how much economic growth is being lost each week the standoff with Democrats continues.

The revised estimates from the Council of Economic Advisers show that the shutdown, now in its fourth week, is beginning to have real economic consequences. The analysis, and other projections from outside the White House, suggests that the shutdown has already weighed significantly on growth and could ultimately push the United States economy into a contraction.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday asked President Donald Trump to reschedule his State of the Union address — or deliver it in writing — as long as the government remains shut down.

"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump.

JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned on Tuesday that a prolonged government shutdown could completely stop economic growth in the US.

“Someone estimated that if it goes on for the whole quarter, it can reduce growth to zero,” Dimon, who’s also the head of lobbying group The Business Roundtable, said on a phone call with reporters. “It’s more of a political issue than anything else.”

There's no way Trump reschedules it. He wants the spectacle of having everyone in the room while him and Pelosi agree to never agree with each other (or find a compromise). He has no shame so he'll gladly step to the microphone. I can't see how she'll be okay with that, though. I wonder if they can lock him out of the Capitol Building so that he doesn't get to give his speech. This almost means for certain that the shutdown is going to last at least as long as Jan 29th, if not further. Trump is sucking the air out of the room, as he's apt to do (while playing games with the livelihoods of Federal workers), and he loves the attention. It's like a rerun of the campaign all over again.

Yeah I vlelieve it was the book Extraction of the Wealth of Nations where Adam Smith suggested multinational companies should circumvent environmental and labor laws strip countries of their natural resources for the sake of absolute advantage and consolidated profit.

He has no shame. Heck, he might even resurrect the set from the Apprentice and deliver it from there. And by not inviting him then the Dems might not be able to credibly have a State of the Union response as is typical.

Trump stands firm and Dems cave prior to the SOTU address on the 29th. Dems cannot risk Trump going on national TV in front of Congress and calling them out. Imagine the shitshow of Trump calling out Nancy with her sitting right behind him. Or Trump turning around, looking Nancy in the eye and offering some type of reasonable deal, like DACA for the wall, that they are currently refusing and challenging her to accept with the whole world watching.
