The people who are responsible for ensuring the safety of the food supply outside of beef, poultry, and pork have all been furloughed. You know, the people that are responsible for making sure that we don't have botulism toxin in canned goods. Or paralytic shellfish poisoning that kills you within 20 minutes or so because your lungs won't work. Or toxigenic E. coli in something like Romaine lettuce. That sort of thing. Those people have been furloughed. Also a lot of the people who are responsible for detecting when something's going on with those sorts of things have been furloughed. People could literally die earlier than they would have because of this. Probably not many. But it could happen. And if things work out in an unlikely way it actually COULD be a lot.

Federal civilians are paid every two weeks, about a week after the pay period ends. The shutdown last week occurred in the second week of that pay period, after close of business on Friday, so most of us got our 80 hours in and will receive one last paycheck. OMB requires that a skeleton crew of payroll employees be excepted to process pay for hours worked. My pay always hits USAA on Saturday, so I'm hoping it's there tomorrow.

Now that we have federal civilians, who everyone loves to make a punching bag, out of the way, there is one interesting group that is going to be a magnet for the press in the next several days:

US Coast Guard

Because USCG falls under DHS, active duty Coasties (i.e. uniformed service members) will NOT be paid on their next scheduled paycheck: January 1st. (Services are paid 1st and 15th every month)

You are going to see a parade of fat dependent moms with a baby in each arm being interviewed on the evening news, with cut shots to daddy out on a Great Lakes ice breaker, flying a rescue chopper, or rounding up brown people in warm waters.

That is going to put some serious pressure on the Orange One.

I may try filing for unemployment insurance next week.

It's capped at $330 a week in Delaware, so that's not even enough for a disease free hooker with all her teeth.

They are VERY preventative. Now, States play a big role too and will mitigate the situation somewhat. But if you ask people in the industry they would much rather have State people looking at them than Federal people because State people are not nearly as tough. In fact, the States tend to be reactive. They tend to ask "did anybody get sick?" The Feds don't do that. They tend to say "The point is to make sure they DON'T get sick"

The Feds do get reactive when necessary. They are constantly monitoring to see if anybody does get sick. But that's not their paradigm.

I've seen the difference personally. I've seen a situation in which the circumstances were completely horrible and a State Health Officer's reaction was "did anybody get sick?" Of course you don't KNOW nobody got sick just because it wasn't reported. But you do know that NOBODY would have wanted to eat the food product involved if they knew what you know.

When it comes to protecting you from anything from spending your weekend wed to the toilet spewing out of both ends or something more serious like dying because you ate a low acid canned food and got whacked by botulism toxin you do NOT want to rely on the States to protect you from that. You want the Feds involved.

And what it all comes down to is that the States want a body count before they do anything. The Feds do not.

I think it's just one paycheck. Similar to the situation with furloughed civilians. They all got one more paycheck for work already done. I think that after the Coast Guard gets its paycheck for the most recent pay period none of those people including Coast Guard staff will receive any pay until after the funding lapse is over.
