FCS Top 50 and Positional Ratings

Guys,

I know I am going to get ripped into on these rankings because I am sure I have missed someone and I know these will be far off by mid-season, however, I put these together as a gauge to for us in knowing who the top names are heading into the season. This list is really just to show where guys probably should be now with a little bit of projection sprinkled in here and there. These rankings are also calculated based on overall career, awards, etc. as well.

There are some projections here such as the EWU RB who has not done anything at the position but I feel eventually will and then there are picks like Roman as the #1 LB because of past numbers and accolades and not because I think he will be #1 in the postseason. I feel that Brian Quick at App State is another player that will likely have a big year and due to his physical tools I bumped him way higher than he probably should be right now. The Penn QB has done nothing to be ranked but my sources have indicated that they expect a big year from him thus he is ranked by not listed here due to the fact that he has yet to play. You will notice a few players here and there like that.

For the record, I am only posting the top 25 of each position, if it went that deep or deeper, and only a little over half of those rated at any position such as just 5 at FB because I have just over 10 rated.

Note: I will update these again in mid August to adjust for any additions, deletions, etc. to rosters.

I wasn't going to post these on AGS but maybe I should do it while Ralph is banned so that way I won't get attacked with stupid comebacks and only get questioned on legit things. Ralph would probably say I am a SoCon homer for having 5 of them in the top 10 or something insane like that.

WOW, impressive lists there. How long did it take you? I am not going to bash anyone for that kind of time and research. I will give you the names of a few GRIZ that will be on that list by years end.

Safety- Eric (sp?)Stoll- taking Colt Anderson's spot in the rotation. He started as a True Freshman for Idaho State.

DT- Carson Bender- He was injured in 08. He is a freak of an athlete for DT. I feel he is a DE playing DT. IF healthy he will be an All American type impact player. He also inherited the famed #37 jersey, which alone says alot about what the team and fans expect of him. Most of GRIZNATION will back me up on him.

DE- Bobby Alt- Transferred from JC. He has the size the GRIZ have been missing at DE. I think he is near 260 LBS. The problem is the GRIZ are very deep at DE. Palmer, Alt, Fetherson (another athletic DL), and Alt's JC teammate (name escapes me). It will be hard for any of these guys to rack up jaw dropping stats.

LB-Caleb McSurdy- He is only a sophomore, and the only rotational LB with NFL like size. He did well as a freshman. His size, tackling, and nastiness will make an impact when he is in the game. Once again, depth will be his only problem. Hauck plays 2 to 3 deep defensively consistently. I do not see that ever changing as long as he coaches.

Offensively, you mentioned nearly every GRIZ in the rotation, however may have missed on 1 player.
Center- Alex Verlanic got a lot of playing time for Quinn last year. He is very smart, and the team played well when he was in there. Verlanic, I believe will be a JR this year.

Also look out for RB, Dan Moore (Freshman). He will be the Thunder to go with Chase Reynolds. Moore is Lex Hillard like, but stronger. Everyone says Dan Moore is the strongest GRIZ. Moore will see some time this year at FB to just get him on the field. I do not expect Moore to put up huge numbers for 2 years, but he will get the bulk of the carries when Reynolds graduates.

I also have a player that cannot be classified at any one position, but is an athlete and versatile. I have no idea how or when the GRIZ will use him, but that player is Gerald Kemp. He was 1 of 3 qbs competing for the job, but with Roper on board, that put him to not starting at qb until 2011, more than likely. He runs a 4.4 something, over 220 lbs, and was a starting guard in basketball for a few years at his HS. He played in the San Diego area in HS. He was being recruited by large schools for other positions. Utah really liked him too for QB, but somehow the GRIZ got lucky and landed him. He is a great athlete and big play waiting to happen. The GRIZ have to find some way to get him on the field. Rather that be in the "WILDCAT", Spread option, slot, hb, or wr. He needs to be on the field!

From what I saw of Trumaine Johnson in his frosh year if he is completely healed up from the injury then I think he will climb your list quickly. The dude is a serious athlete and was pretty amazing out there as a freshman last year.

Thanks! It took me a few days to actually put the list together based on information I had compiled or knew since back in last year. I ran it by some people who could tell me if someone is hurt or not returning and then tweaked it.

Thanks for those names. One thing I noticed on your list is that none of them touched the field for Montana last year or they were backups who couldn't possibly be rated a top 20-40 player at their position yet.

The center is on my list but he is lower down the rankings. I didn't post the full lists because I went really deep at some positions. I know I had 55-60 WRs, over 35 QBs, etc.

I think you can add Jason Cunningham to the list as a kicker at any time, he's only a soph but the kid is legit out to 55 yds. It wasn't that many years ago that the Cats would would go on 4th down rather than try a 25 yard FG and many times tried a 2 point conversion because a PAT was a bad risk. Many folks don't give kickers the credit they deserve, but I'll take 3 over zip any drive, way too many games are decided by making or blowing a FG, PAT, etc.

Thanks for the info! He just barely missed my list. I only ranked the top 20 kickers total on my files but had I gone to 25 he would have made it. I will post the full and complete final rankings in mid August so you can see every name I ranked.

Funny you mention Trumaine. He was the 1st guy I looked for. I just hope TJ is 100% again this year. The 2nd was Bender. Too bad Bender got injured last year. He is a stud athlete for any position. It is hard to fathom many more athletic DT's than Bender. I honestly feel Bender's better position would be DE or LB.

Like I've told a few of the major Griz fans on here...I played in high school for all 4 years with Bender. He is a freakish athlete with a gigantic frame. He played linebacker, d-end, fullback, tight end, basically anything you wanted. And with a sub-5 second 40 time, he's just ridiculous.

Yes, Wood left the program. I am not sure how true this is, but he supposedly is trying to make the team at Texas A & M. I did not even look for any GRIZ kicker or punter. As for kicker, I think Brody McKnight will have a good year. Punting job is up in the air, but a few egrizzers posted they seen a new punter booming some. I am not sure who that might be though.

When I ran this list by someone around the league who would know they did not mention that Wood has left. I will double check and change that if I can get confirmation he is gone.

Keep an eye out for Dominique McDuffie, DB/S for ASU. He started as a true freshman last year at LSU and was injured in practice (blew out his knee) shortly there after. He would have started ahead of Ed Gainey, and has great size, speed, and hits hard. I've heard that it's yet undecided if he will continue at corner or will move to a more natural safety position.
