The part I like about Trip’s posts are that it reminds me of a critical period I passed through at the end of 9th grade and a few months into 10th where I thought socialism might be a good idea. We were under a Republican president who was doing great things (of which I was not willing to acknowledge at the time) but being portrayed by the MSM as Satan reborn.

Whew. I’m glad I got through that awkward political phase quickly before I got my driver license. I might have put a Dukakis for President sticker on my car.

I need to refine how I'm arguing my beliefs though, and the fundamental reasons behind them.

Don't worry 93 - I'm not going through any phase. I'll probably be more progressive and liberal in the future.

I think most of us understand your fundamental reasons, at least I do.
But let's talk about the specific change and debate what the outcome would be compared to the current situation.
I think you will find that most people would acknowledge that improvement is needed. But it requires only a tweak rather than going in a complete different direction because of the consequences associated with it.

That’s a mature POV.

I would urge you to stay and not “reflect, study” in a vacuum. By arguing your position, you can alter it, strengthen it or abandon it as you hear from the opposition and take their views and experiences into account.

This board is a great tool. It’s a meeting place where, dare I say friends, get together and have been for over 10 years.

Yes, you do. While you may have some salient points, they're typically buried under a mass of contradictions from one post to the next.

A group of adults helping shepherd us through a period with an ineffective president isn't "undermining" the government--it's part of the checks and balances that have helped this country survive and thrive through a LOT worse than Donald Trump. There's been social and economic "injustice" since about oh, the big bang happened, so making yourself sick over it isn't going to help you OR them. At the end of the day, THIS country, using THIS general political system, provide for a human beings' best chance at success, no matter WHAT their lot in life the day they're born. That's been proven time and time and time again.

You shouldn't let your beliefs eat you up....everybody wants this nation to be the best it can, but views on how to get there are going to differ...and differ greatly. That's human nature. But just because my version of best and my ideas about how to get to "best" are different from yours doesn't make me the devil.

But the NYT op-ed published today should concern every American - someone in the administration is saying that things have become so bad, they're operating a shadow government of unelected officials to keep things going.

As much as I dislike Trump, that's literally a coup. Think about that: a coup is happening in the most powerful nation in the world, GOP operatives are leading it, and a Republican Congress is turning a blind eye.

Today's NYT op-ed is a helluva historic document for the ages.

As an American you should be worried about what your party is doing...and they've been doing this for years but conservatives have been too blind to see it. Hell, AZ would already be out there shooting up the place if Democrats tried to pull a coup off, and here we have someone openly admitting a shadow GOP government is operating behind the scenes (oh the irony).

Like or dislike Trump, this should worry EVERYONE.
If it’s Mike Pence, it’s not an unelected official. :coffee:

Apparently the op-ed uses the word “lodestar”, which basically nobody on the planet still uses, except Mike Pence.
Spoiler: show
The more likely explanation is that the leaker is savvy enough to know that the linguistics would be analyzed and threw in a Pence word as a diversion, but that ruins a good story!
I don’t think it’s Pence.

I’m not even 100% sure it isn’t a low level staffer

Either way, I think we will know the identity within 36 hours, because the article has surely set the NYT against itself internally.... the investigative journos must comb the editorial department. I would love to be a fly on the wall in the editorial boardroom a5 the Gray Lady today

Was thinking the same thing earlier this morning. There's no way the "editorial department" keeps this a secret for more than about 48 hours.

Well if they were correct about Trump being unhinged enough to start the apocalypse then it should be a bad move from their perspective too

All this is going to do is erode what little trust he had in his few legitimate advisors and encourage more impulsiveness

This article was just poking the pit bull - there is no good outcome

I'm not entirely unsure that wasn't their main objective. See if they could just push him completely over the edge. That's why I would put even money on this being written by a staffer at this point.

Can say this thread is why I started reading this site in the first place. Lots of different perspectives and ideas from people in all walks of life. Most people grow and change as they go through life, as long as they keep an open mind and not get too fixated on a particular thought process or idea.

My thoughts as well. The only thing the topic of the article was there for is to get a specific reaction, whether that is the general public or Trump himself. That and somebody angling for a future book deal.

I don't understand the hysteria on either side of the aisle on these newly released e-mails. On the racial profiling e-mail, the then Kavanaugh (back in 2001) seems to be on the side of race-neutral profiling. Is that a bad thing? And then on the abortion one, he seems to be making an editorial correction by saying that not all legal scholars believe in the settled nature of Roe v Wade (not interjecting his own view on the case, just that there isn't unanimity by "all" legal scholars on this).

I understand that politicians need and want drama, but my two questions are 1) why were any of these e-mails listed as committee confidential - there doesn't appear to be anything controversial in them and 2) why were the Dems, especially Booker, so incensed to get these seemingly innocuous e-mails out in the open? Are details so unimportant anymore and it's just about the emotion?
