That's a debate we've already had 89...
and I happen to agree that some judgments are "better" than others
Hey, at least we're past the inane idea that the human mind is capable of "no judgement"

Gil believes religious faith is sacred and untouchable
I think it's just like any other belief and open for logical debate

it's about the only thing he and I disagree on
I've read Gil's posts more as he respects others religious faith whether he agrees with it or not. Not that believes religious faith sacred and untouchable.

That's just semantics...
The words Sacred and Respect are practically the same word (to honor)
with "sacred" one simply refines the criteria to religion otherwise they are identical

If we side step the semantics and actually get to the point - that could make things more interesting
The idea of holding religion fully accountable has always been viewed as disrespectful

It's all just semantics
I guess my question would be: Should we think Religion is so special that it precludes investigation
It's easy enough to "not engage" in the debate
but if you step into the debate then by default it's open for discussion right..?

Ultimately I would argue - some religions are dumber than others
Which is a super fun debate BTW

Yes there is some overlap in the definitions of both words in a venn diagram sort of way. I would say that in this instance to hold something sacred is to venerate it and to respect something is to hold it in due regard. Close but no cigar on being the same word.

I can't speak for Gil on this level of detail but I try to respect other people's beliefs just like I try to respect other aspects of who they are as a person such as their sexual orientation. I don't hold their beliefs or their sexual orientation sacred.

And no I don't think that Religion is so special that it precludes investigation. And yes this can be a super fun debate.

Sure all religion/spirituality/faith is up for discussion, and I don't mind a good joke about it either. Respecting a person's beliefs is part of a honest logical discussion.

The differing beliefs of God's Will could be a good discussion.

Maybe if you use the word 'semantics' a few more times you'll convince somebody you're right on this one. Won't be me, but keep trying. :thumb:

I don't know the best answer to when life begins, but I know "birth" is bad answer scientifically and morally.

FTR, life begins at conception, there's not much debate on that. The debate is when human rights begin. That is hard to pin down, which is why I err on the side of the baby.

At around 2-3 months of gestation, a doctor tells a pregnant woman, “if you carry this baby to term, you’ll die”... or, “your health will be affected adversely”

That’s a pretty compelling argument for an abortion

A doctor telling that same woman the same thing as she’s in labor at 9 months is a bit less credible

Don't forget, they include mental health in this bill. Not just that she will die or have major physical issues. At 9 months she panics about having a baby... she can terminate right up to delivery.

And we have a late term abortion clinic in Bethesda. They happen all the time.
