Disconnect here. If Sanford can't stay true to the most important VOW a person takes, then what integrity does he have?

No one claimed Clinton had integrity. He didn't run on a family values/integritity platform.
What a lame-ass cop out. "He didn't run on a family values platform"....thus he gets a pass from the liberal left.
THANK YOU! That's what I'm hearing. He doesn't publically admit to having values so he can do what he wants. Sounds like excuses. Craig, Foley, Vinetti, Clinton, SPitzer, McGreevy and Sanford failed in thier duties as a husband and that reflects on them poorly. We will not tolerate that bullshit.

Besides, the fact that he cheated isn't a problem with me, it's that he left the country and told noone and didn't transfer power to Andre. That's the real issue.

how is it a cop out??? he didnt run a campaign saying "I AM THE ARBITER OF 'VALUES'" the HYPOCRISY is the problem... not the deed.
It sounds like as long as you don't say it or voice against it, you can do it and it's ok. That is what is sounds lke TTBF and Jon are saying. Like it or not, it doesn't matter if there's an R or D after your name. You are an elected official and all policies and philosophies aside, thier personal conduct is unbecoming.

I believe so.

Folks, it doesn't matter if Clinton did it or if Craig fucked up. Different people, different cases. It doesn't really matter that Mark had the Latin Fever. It's him abandoning the state(in essence).

Really? How so? Can you give examples? By many accounts Jimmy Carter may have been one of the most principled men ever to hold the office of President. Do you think he was a good Prez?

Values are nice - but they are a luxury item when it comes to choosing an elected official.
I totally disagree. A philanderer puts himself, his family and the people that elected him at risk. They risk getting caught and will lie, cheat whatever else to avoid admitting it. Clinton is a great example. His ego and public image were more important than the country. He should have simply said I did it but didn't have the values required to do that. Kennedy the same way. Bush on the failures of the war in Iraq the same way. Values matter.

I just spoke with Sanford and he explained to me that he went down there looking for Carmen Sandiego and apparently found her. This is a good day. She's been missing since the 90's!

For two years Clinton did little in office other than fight scandals and deny the truth. He would have had two years to try to accomplish something instead of constantly swatting pesky little ( truthful) allegations away.

If you take your approach, the biggest sleazebag in the world could be president as long as he does a good job. This isn't running a company. There is a larger agenda including to some extent setting an example when someone is elected president. Let's see I hope you guys don't mind if I go have an administrative threesome with the wives of my cabinet. Personally, I think it is the easiest thing in the world to understand and it surprises me that you don't seem to.

So when you vote, do you vote for the guy who you think has been faithful to his wife? Or do you vote for the guy who shares your political views? If Jimmy Carter runs again will you vote for him?

Vote for the guy that consistently lies better and gives you a false sense of security/hope.

86 maybe there is another way of looking at this. You may think that it is not a big deal for elected officials to by unfaithful in their marriage. But the problem is the situation it puts them in to do things they would not otherwise do. Examples,

Ted Kennedy, does any one really believe that he would have acted at chappaquiddick in the fasion he did if the woman in the car would have been his wife.

Mark Sanford, the guy seemingly loses tough with reality and heads off to Argentina to see his girlfriend as if no one is going to notice potentially abandoning his respsonsibilities as governor.

John Kennedy, there were rumors that his girlfriends included mafia plants and soviet spies. I don't have a clue if any of that is true but it is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.

It is not so much the act of infidelity than the fact that we are still a society look for fidelity in relationships. Since we still are such a society, when an elected politican disregards that and cheats they put themselves in many situations where they lie, hide, sneak and potentially put themselves in a situation to be extorted. It is not so much that what they did is any different than a normal joe, but the decisions they make and the actions they take will be impacted by their infidelity and in potentially harmful ways to the people that put them in office.

I understand your point. As I said earlier, I'm cynical when it comes to politicians, I think all politicians are crooked, hence my rationale for arguing that values are overrated. I'd like my politicians to have values, I just don't think many of them do so I don't focus on their values but rather their policies.
