Trump Impeached

Post by SuperHornet »

I haven't seen this in any other thread yet (though I haven't by any stretch read them all).

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Rep. Al Green (D-TX) filed an article of impeachment against President Trump earlier this week. It's expected that this action will go absolutely nowhere. But I could see this backfiring on the Democrats if the Republicans get behind it. The end state of a successful impeachment would be the elevation of Mike Pence to the White House. Sure, Pence would conduct the office much more sanely, but he'd also do so in a much more conservative way than Democrats would care to see.

Regardless of one's views on Trump, this will be interesting to watch....

I think that if the Republicans get the slightest indication that they can impeach him and get away with it politically with the nut jobs who voted for Trump during the Republican primaries they will do it. Impeaching Trump would, as you say, mean having a conservative Republican who is way more qualified and way more emotionally mature in the position. I have zero doubt that most of them would rather see Pence as President than Trump as President.

That doesn't mean I would. To me Pence destroyed his own credibility by associating himself with Trump. I think that If he were a person of integrity he wouldn't be in the position he's in right now because he never would have agreed to validate Trump by being his running mate. But I think the overwhelming majority if not ALL of the Republicans in Congress would, at this point, rather have Pence in the position than Trump.

The problem is there are still all those nut jobs who voted for Trump in primaries out there and the Republicans have to suck up to them. They're a minority of US Citizens. But, unfortunately for Republicans, they are a very big part of the Republican base.

I believe those nut jobs are called "voters" and while they are a minority of US citizens they formed a majority in the Electoral College, which is the process we use to elect Presidents. Details, but important details. :coffee:

All of the nut jobs who voted for Trump in the primaries are voters. But not all voters are nut jobs. And we're having that demographic evolution we've talked about.

Having a base that would do something like vote for Trump to be the Republican Party nominee is an issue for Republicans. In the long term, they have a big problem.

And you feel the Democrats have a strong bench to run in 2020??? I'd love to hear your insight on that...let's look forward...this looking back is getting real old

And for accuracy, Trump has not been impeached...one representative has filed the papers with one co-sponsor...

Impeachment is having the House approve this action...

Come on Al do it! Make every one of your donk colleagues squirm!

"Call for Trump impeachment puts pressure on top Dems

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) on Tuesday threatened to force a House floor vote next week on impeaching President Trump, creating a new dilemma for his party's leaders.

Green said he would file an impeachment resolution next week while condemning Trump's attacks on NFL players who have kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

Because the resolution is considered privileged under House rules, it would automatically force action on the House floor within two days.

While House Republicans would presumably reject the resolution, Green could still force a procedural vote that would put his colleagues on the spot on impeachment.......

.......Democrats have had no problem criticizing Trump, but most have stopped well short of calls for impeachment, worried it could backfire on them as it did on Bill Clinton-era Republicans.

Most rank-and-file Democrats worry that rushing to endorse impeachment proceedings would look like an overreach....."

I don't know if the Democrats have a strong bench or not. It's unpredictable. At this point of George H. W. Bush's Presidency no one would've dreamed of the Democrats having a candidate for the next election that could beat him. Most had never heard of Bill Clinton. When Clinton did start running, he was one of the "Seven Dwarfs" vying for a spot to run. I can't find where George H. W. Bush was in terms of approval rating was at 9 months but at 6 months he was at 67% approve vs. 18% disapprove (net +49). Trump was at 39% approve vs. 55% disappprove (net -16) at six months and he's close to that now.

Doesn't matter anyway. Whether it's 2020 or later, the demographic trend indicates the Republicans are in trouble UNLESS they can find a way to do a LOT better among non Whites. They didn't make any progress in that regard during 2016 and right now I think their standard bearer is making the situation much worse.

There's a major political party that's in serious trouble for the long term and it isn't the Democratic Party.

Didn't get to this earlier but note that I referred to people who voted for Trump during the primaries. THOSE are the nut jobs I'm talking about.

There are other people who are Republicans who did not vote for Trump during the primaries. In fact recall that the majority of people who voted during those primaries did NOT vote for Trump. I in fact think Trump benefited from that. I think several Republican candidates would have beaten him during the primaries IF they had had him one on one throughout. Marco Rubio and Ted C r u z for sure. But Trump benefited from having a large field and he did have the plurality.

Regardless of whether I'm right or wrong about that I am objectively right about the fact that Trump did not get the majority of the votes cast during the Republican primaries.

But we had people who didn't really like Trump who went ahead and voted for him during the General Election just because he was the Republican and they didn't like Hillary Clinton.

I think what they did is horrible. To vote for a mentally unstable, immoral, dishonest, and totally unqualified person like that to occupy the Presidency is indefensible. But it's not quite the same as doing what the people who supported Trump during the primaries did. It's not at the same "nut job" level.

And then there are the crazy people who ignored their friends' impassioned pleas that a vote for anyone other than Trump was a vote for Clinton and wrote in.

We all know who THAT was, don't we?

Also I think what Hillary did BEFORE she ever started a campaign was her biggest problem. She made that decision to use a private e mail account on a private server for government business. There's no way anyone can ever prove it but I strongly believe she'd have won easily if she had never done that.
