Are you going to answer my question or not? By your logic you are implying that Leaf would have torn up the CFL. Do you REALLY want to take that position?dbackjon wrote:To some degree. But I do think Leaf was a better college QB.grizzaholic wrote:

Dback has no clue. He is just trying to rile up the Montana/Montana State/CC fans.

I just got done watching it again, and if I were MSU I would be kinda pissed. Very few mentions. CC gets some love but being an NAIA school ESPN just passed them over after some very nice words.

No one cares how good someone does in the CFL. DD couldn't even MAKE a NFL team.
Next thing you know you will be touting the virtues of the WNBA...

Re: ESPN college football nation
Let's see who's argument is pathetic: Ryan Leaf was given every advantage in the world ONLY because he was tall. DD wasn't. You are taking the position that a mental midget would have torn up the CFL just because he's tall. Ryan Leaf couldn't carry DD's jock. And it has nothing to do with DD being a Griz. The argument wasn't who could make an NFL team. The argument is who is the better athlete. DD wins by a mile, based on BOTH their careers.dbackjon wrote:Tom - step back for a minute and see how pathetic your argument is. IT IS THE CFL for gosh sakes.AZGrizFan wrote:

If you think Leaf's only asset was his height, then you are dumber than we thought
In that case, Yao Ming should be an all-Pro QB...
I am not arguing that Leaf would have torn up the CFL. I am arguing that the CFL is irrelevant.

Wait...wasn't this about the BEST ATHLETE to ever come out of the State of Montana? If so, than there are hundreds of guys that are better athletes than Leaf. Hell, J. Ferris was a way better athlete than Leaf, and he has a SB ring.

Re: ESPN college football nation
Dback loses a some credibility here. No big deal but I'm not gonna sit argue with you when you are clearly as misinformed as a Pro Scout. Ryan Leaf was over 6'3 in high school DD was 5'11 and when they were in head to head competition DD was the QB. He made the most out of every opportunity he was given much like Doug Flutie did but he didn't get the same situation to prove himself in the NFL. When he was on the roster in San Diego trying to make the NFL Dave got one shot in the sceond half of a preseason game and came in to QB SD midway through the 3rd qtr. and brought them back to give them a chance to win from a deficit of like 17 pts down. I wish he would have made that team.
The reason Dave walks on water above most other fantastic athletes we've had come through Missoula is that he just had a magic that always made you think your team was gonna win every game and it usually happened. It was something unexplainable outside of his athleticism, it was a magic the guy had.
So I know what you're doing here and you're either a poor judge of talent and leadership or you never watched Dave play and feel sorry for you either way. There I gave you a little more but that's it for this discussion for me so the rest of you Griz fans keep trying to convince him.

The NFL scouts got it right? You are correct sir we do know more than they do about this particular issue as we actually lived it. I'm glad you figured it out. What you are trying to say is that some numbnuts writing an article from Conneticut probably has a better feel for what we have known about with these guys since they were in high school? Got it!dbackjon wrote:LMAO - so ESPN, all Pro Scouts, all NFL teams are wrong, but a few Montana partisians know more than all of them?

Re: ESPN college football nation
As for Leaf, if he had not signed a huge contract based on potential, which he never lived up to, he would not have been in the league the time he was. Many pro scouts were wrong on him. Thankfully for the Colts, they were right on the money as for who the better QB was. Leaf was a bust. Based on how their careers played out, I would say Dickenson turned out to have made a more successful career. He chose to go with security of being in the CFL, and did not pursue the NFL until later in his career.
Nobody knows how Dickenson would have faired in the nfl if given a better chance. Nobody knows if Leaf would have torn up the CFL. What held Dickenson back was his size. Leaf failed miserably due to a bad attitude, no leadership, and failed to grasp the nuances of being a pro QB. Mentally, I doubt he would have done better than Dave in the CFL. We will never know and arguing this point to Montanans not name Leaf is pointless. This is an issue where they will not change their opinion on either.

Based on what? Leaf had one good year in 1997 when Wazzu went to the Rose Bowl, then left early for the draft. That's all he ever did. His sophomore year in 1996, he only put up was a 52% completion percentage and an average 127.5 passing efficiency rating. Let's face it, Leaf's entire football career was nothing but a one-year wonder. So what if he was drafted high? The NFL scouts just ate him up like they do with all tall QBs with strong arms, but, as we've seen numerous times the last 20 years, the scouts' track record on QBs is pretty lousy (Ware, Marinovich, Druckenmiller, McNown, Akili Smith, Tom Brady only a 7th. rounder, etc.).
