It may still be a long road for WCU.

Post by bobbythekidd »

Western Carolina football coach Dennis Wagner has released his 2009 depth chart heading into preseason practice in August, and the obvious emphasis is on youth.

More than half of his 44-player two deep for offense and defense (24) are either true or redshirt freshmen or sophomores (12 each) and another 10 are juniors.

Only 10 seniors are on the first and second string, including just one first-teamer on offense (center Victor Aquilina).

Eight of the 11 second-team offensive players are true or redshirt freshmen.

Due to a combination of graduation, no longer being on the team or a demotion below second string, only one of the eight players who ran the ball for WCU last year are on the two deep (starting quarterback Zack Jaynes, who was third in rushing with 148 yards).

Sophomore Quan Warley, last season's leading rusher with 672 yards, is on the roster but not listed among the top two tailbacks.

WCU seems very similar to LU during Coach Rocco's first season. Young team, and a coach that can get it done. I think WCU has a great chance at surprising some people on the gridiron. Do I think they'll be beating Appy State next season? No, but they have great shots at Elon and Georgia Southern.

I would love to be in the same room as Appy if WCU beat ASU :)

We are going to be EXTREMELY young this year as Wagner has all but run off 95% of Briggs players. If we can improve on last year's 3-9 it would tell me things are going the right way. I would be thrilled with 5-6, 6-5 or above would be icing on the cake. That said, I'm calling 4-7 right now just to be on the safe side. :thumb:

All kidding aside, I am glad to see what Wagner is doing @ WCU. I have a lot of respect for him, just from what I've read and heard.

App fans know that one day WCU will end up winning, and when that happens we won't make a big fuss. We will get in our flying cars and go peacefully.

I am too....Wagner seems to be a class act intent upon doing it that right way....

Ya'll scheduled 4 HS teams in 2010 as well? :? Or is 2010 the year for the next uniform update that's supposed to push WCU over the top to 3 league wins per season....

Western will have the best team that they have had since 2005. But I still don't see any chance of a winning season, although they will get some upsets. I can see 4-7 or 5-6 for WCU.

After 2-9 and 1-10 with Briggs, 5-6 will show major improvement. Heck Wagner matched Briggs last 2 years LAST YEAR. HA! It's gonna be a good future for sure and man, imagine the SoCon with a strong ASU, GSU, Wofford, WCU, and Elon!! Exciting times.

Per Wagner, he's got some work to do.
