Heartbroken over Rand Paul's Posture

Post by JohnStOnge »

I've been seeing this sort of thing from Rand Paul. Today it was acting as though the New York Times story about Nunes getting his info from the White House is no big deal.

Here's the New York Times story:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/30/us/p ... -news&_r=0

So here's the way I interpret the situation if the story is true. Two White House staffers, one of which is a former Nunes staffer, called Nunes over to give him some intelligence. Then Nunes went over to the White House to ostensibly tell Trump about something he supposedly didn't already know. Then he gave a press conference about it.

I mean, if that story is true, how obvious is it that Nunes and the White House collaborated to dispense information designed to deceive the American public? I mean, really. C'mon.

Yet Rand Paul's attitude is that, EVEN if the story is completely true, it's nothing.

What really disturbs me is that I have in the past thought Rand Paul is an intellectually honest person. Now I am forced to admit that he's clearly not.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I thought he was honest. That's one reason why he was my favorite among the Republican Primary candidates at the start. But what I've seen lately from him has forced me ot reject that notion. And this particular instance is an example. You have to be pretty intellectually dishonest to say you don't see the problem with what the referenced story is IF the story is true. I can see saying to reserve judgement and saying we don't know if it's true yet. But to act like it's nothing if it IS true is pretty bad.

Rand Paul is as big an opportunist and grandstander as any DC politician. He keeps one toe in the small-l libertarian pool for show, but he still harbors hopes of getting the GOP nomination someday. His old man was a crotchety crank but more ideologically consistent. Stick a fork in Rand: he's done on the national level.

I like the way they're letting General Mike "If you're not guilty of a crime what do you need immunity for?" Flynn twist in the wind.

Sounds like they don't need him... 8-)

Can any of our legal minds here shed light on whether he'll be tried under the UCMJ? I ask because I think there was a case in the last few years where a retired Air Force general was recalled to active duty and punished for coercing females to have sex.

That's true.

I like Paul, but not because he lines up with me on every issue. Large L libertarians have problems with him too- just look at every 5th article in Reason

But he is relatively consistent on overseas adventurism, and privacy issues.. and for those two things I'm happy to forgive some of his departures from orthodoxy

He's a crook like the rest of them. :coffee:

And there is something creepy about him too, same with his dad.

You mentioned Justin Amash in another thread too and they both seem decently principled compared to everyone else.
