That sounds more "right" of liberal. :)
Socialism and Communism are left of liberal, IMO.

You're confusing authoritarianism with ideology. Authoritarianism can come from both sides of the spectrum.

I agree, it can come from both sides. I just don't see liberalism at work on the Democratic side of things, not much conservatism on the other side either.

Well that's certainly a fair assessment... Can I now paint unrealistic, selfish, tin foil hat wearing libertarians with the same brush strokes? 8-) Hey, I kind of like Rand Paul, but he once took medicare payments as an optometrist! Reagan hated government so much he decided to raise taxes 11 times and increase spending more than all presidents before him combined!

Labels are a tricky thing. Ideologies change, and definitions get co-opted. Some of your accusations are fair points but some are hair-on-fire hyperbole. Hint: I'm guessing Bernie's goal is less the Five Year Plans and more the Square Deal.

Both Obama and Hillary have rhetorically claimed progressivism while clinging to the status quo from a policy standpoint.

As Ganny likes to point out, I'm a hopeless romantic for the bygone years of Midwest chataquas and hard working farmers rising up to fight the monied interests of East Coast bankers and entrenched power of the robber barons. When progressives believed in a system that, as you say, improved things for all while preserving our national heritage, and laying a solid groundwork for future generations. (If I were mimicking you here, which I swear I'm not, this would be the point where I'd say small l libertarians won't be happy until 99% of the wealth is consolidated into the hands of small few and we're all living in company towns. )

But I won't hold my breath under the current duopoly and pay to play system that the Democratic Party is going to produce anything close to that. That's why I no longer vote for them.

To me, progressive simply means improvement as a society. Liberal means open mindedness. I will continue to be hopeful in those two ideals while remaining heavily cynical about the entire deal.

So back to my questions.

The Democratic Party is progressive enough? It has drifted away from concerns for Main Street, middle America, and the plight of the middle class. CID has written extensively on this elitism and he's spot on.

What does a non-populist economic policy that appeals to independent working class or Jill Stein voters look like?
From what I'm seeing the Democratic party has moved left of liberalism. The open minded, progressive, Democratic Politician is not the norm. Today's Democratic Politician is very much the same as a Republican Politician. The both have the "my way or the highway attitude", with very little give on either side.
Try the extreme left. From everything we have seen (and have recorded evidence of) is that the Democratic Party caters to and aligns itself more with the overly-sensitive, close-minded bigot individuals in our country. What's that saying, "What we see in others is a reflection of ourselves"? Look at the facts

Democratic Party (party of progress and inclusion)
1. They had 2, old white people as candidates for POTUS - 1 of whom was sabotaged by the party
2. Supporters have committed acts of violence (read: Criminal Behavior) against anyone that thinks or acts differently
3. They assign labels like "racist" to anyone that supported Trump.
4. They preach free speech, religious tolerance, peace and open government except they don't actually practice any of that
5. You're a good person..unless you're a straight white male. Then you're pure evil simply b/c your white. But hey, Democrats aren't racist. They just don't like white men.

Republican put up 18+ people for President, including a woman and a black man; men married to immigrants and 1st Generation Americans. And there's no evidence of Republicans intimidating or assaulting Democrats before or after the election.

Is this the Liberal Tea Party? Perhaps. Possibly. Republicans can't ignore all the crap they spewed following Obama's election in 2008. But one thing Republicans didn't do was engage in criminal activity against supporters and businesses b/c John McCain/Mittens lost the election.

Huh?

Yeah, there is.

I'm not saying it represents all Republicans... just as the random acts against Trump supporters shouldn't represent all Democrats.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Ethiopian immigrant Yemaj Adem has worked five years in Grand Rapids as a cab driver and never experienced rage from a fare like he did Saturday.

"People have gotten angry before but they've never punched me," he said.

The man yelled "Trump, Trump, Trump" as he was using both hands to punch Adem in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 12, the cab driver said.

Grand Rapids police are investigating the assault as a potential case of ethnic intimidation and are looking for five women who were in the cab just prior to the alleged assault. Police say they could have vital witness information.

A Kansas man accused of fatally shooting a bar patron in Olathe thought he had killed an Iranian immigrant, a bartender told a 911 dispatcher hours after the shooting.

Adam Purinton, 51, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder after witnesses say he walked into Austin's Bar and Grill on Wednesday night, yelled "Get out of my country," and began shooting. Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed and Alok Madasani, 32, was wounded. Both men were from India and worked at a nearby tech firm. A third man who tried to stop the attack also was wounded.

Hours later, a bartender at Clinton, Mo., called 911 and said a man had walked into Applebee's restaurant and announced that he had "killed two Iranians." The woman warned police not to arrive with sirens blaring for fear Purinton would "freak out."

Police arrested Purinton without incident a short time later.

angry Trump supporter allegedly attacked two Muslim women who were pushing their baby strollers through Brooklyn.

The New York Daily News reports that 32-year-old Emirjeta Xhelili yelled Islamophobic slurs at two Muslim women who were out on a walk with their babies near her Brooklyn home.

“Get the f*ck out of here,” the woman yelled, according to prosecutors. “Get the f*ck out of America, b*tches… This is America — you shouldn’t be different from us.”

She punched the two women in their faces and tried ripping their hijabs off their heads. Prosecutors even alleged that she tried knocking over the stroller that contained a 15-month-old baby.

The Daily News notes that she has several social media posts in which she cheers on Donald Trump’s candidacy and portrays him as some sort of mythical savior.

“America is the ark of Noah,” one reads. “Trump’s gonna win.”

Xhelili is being held on $50,000 bond, or $25,000 cash bail.

The victim told police that the suspect began to call her names, "and verbally abuse her due to her religion," according to the police report. The victim said that she tried to ignore the suspect but she "would not relent." After leaving for a moment, the suspect came back and "threw an unknown liquid-like substance" on the victim's back and then fled the scene.

The victim is black and wears a hijab covering her head, and the suspect is a white woman with blond hair, according to the Council on American Islamic Relations, which released a statement regarding the incident. The victim told CAIR that the suspect said that she was voting for Donald Trump in hopes "that he would send 'all of you terrorist Muslims out of this country.'"

MPD is investigating the incident as a hate crime.

The victim recounted the incident to WJLA. "I'm more nervous than ever and I've lived over here for six years," she said.

A Massachusetts man is accused of attacking a Muslim airline employee at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, allegedly kicking and shouting obscenities at the woman and telling her that President Donald Trump "will get rid of all of you," authorities said.

The Queens District Attorney's Office said Robin Rhodes, of Worchester, had arrived from Aruba and was awaiting a connecting flight to Massachusetts Wednesday night when he approached Delta employee Rabeeya Khan, who wears a hijab, while she was sitting in her office.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said Rhodes came up to the door and went on a profanity-laced tirade, asking the woman if she was praying. Rhodes then allegedly punched the door, which hit the back of Khan's chair. Khan asked Rhodes what she had done to him and Rhodes replied, "You did nothing." He then cursed at her and kicked her in the leg, Brown said.

On the massive scale that the Democrats are? Tea Party Rallys didn't end with fires, personal and property damage. I didn't say Republicans didn't do that kind of shit just not like the Democrats are. They are seriously butt hurt that they didn't get the coronation they were promised.

Here's the thing-

The Dems can come back into the cabin but they have a serious choice to make (and I think they are beyond the point where it is possible)

Economic equality of opportunity and identity politics are mutually exclusive.

The fact is that the middle class is who you need to win over, and it is predominantly white. In fact, the middle class is much whiter than the overall population. The Dems have embraced the multiculturalism but along the way they have allowed it to be corrupted into a dog whistle which signifies the demonization of white America.

The flyover white middle class used to be the bread and butter of the Democratic Party back when the Dems were about jobs (real jobs) and the safety net. Middle class America now rightly perceives that the economic message of the Democratic Party is tilted towards the poor and minorities at their expense.

The DNC has a choice to make but they wont make it because to go back to being the DNC of the 1990s means creating a schism between the jobs/safety net camp and the SJW camp. I think they would survive it, and I could even get on board if they did so (with a dash of fiscal restraint), but it won't happen.

We are heading towards complete and total polarization between the middle class and the aggrieved minorities/coastal elite allies.

So at this point, it really doesn't matter what a winning Dem economic policy would look like, because it would involve breaking ranks with the aggrieved classes. What they don't get is that they have created the biggest aggrieved class of all.

No...I wasn't giving Republicans a pass. That's what I was saying. Sorry for the miscommunication. I'm not giving Republicans a pass. Both Parties have supporters that steal the limelight and make the entire look bad. I even said "Republicans can't ignore all the crap they've spewed."

If a Party is focused on trying to appeal to the White middle class it is focused on appealing to a demographic that is shrinking as a proportion of the population. Also, all projections suggest that it will continue to shrink.

I don't think it's a good long term strategy if one is just being pragmatic and looking at the long term.

Heading towards? Heck, aren't we already there?
Not yet. Everybody's just mad at each other right now but the lights are still on and you can still go out after dark.

Are you saying that assaulting and killing people in the name of politics isn't as bad as protesting and making a mess?

Absolutely! I ain't afraid to admit when "my side" (whatever the hell that is  ) might be wrong and I apply the same effort to left leaning screeds as well.
