With a McChrystal, you're largely right. But Colin Powell is still revered at State. He had no legacy aspirations and instead turned his attention internally to the horrible HR issues (that still exist) and lack of access to basic things like email for all employees.

Actually only one person and those around her with no administrative backbone struggled with it.

The rest of us know and follow the rules (and get stripped of security clearances and even sometimes prosecuted when we don't).

CID, did you happen to get any emails about the Hatch Act after the election? I got a real humdinger of one. Never seen anything like it in 22 years of working federally.

Go ahead and watch the interview, clearly there won't be a dual wall spanning the entire southern border as promised to the dumb asses that literally believed it. Hell, his own words were "some of it won't be a wall but a fence". Yeah no ****, large potions of the boarder are already just a fence.
I don't remember hearing him say a 'dual' wall during the campaign. Even if he did, most of the time it was just 'wall'. And there's not a big difference between a wall and fence.
If you've crossed the TJ border you know the difference between a wall (portions adjacent to the crossing) and the fence (portion you drive parallel to as you head to Rosarito. Those metal fences currently up are completely useless. But yeah, a fence will do the trick. :dunce:

As far as the dual wall goes, I recall someone talking about it. Must have been one of Trumps surrogates. Either way I've always felt it won't get built, because it wouldn't stop folks from coming over...oh and tunnels.

If there was a same size (height/thickness) wall there instead of fence there isn't going to be any difference in effectiveness. :dunce: Its not whether its called a 'wall' or 'fence' that matters but its size & composition along with the other security measures/layers (BP agents, sensors, cameras, aircraft, drones, etc) But keep making a big deal that Trump said fence along with wall..

I was saying this past summer he should say 'fence' instead of 'wall' because there wasn't a big difference between the 2, it was just semantics, and it sounded less harsh. Post election with the left still in full meltdown mode Trump is clearly trying to sound more moderate & presidential in his tone.

As far as tunnels, those aren't being dug to smuggle people. Not worth the trouble. They are being dug to move drugs. The cartels don't want thousands of illegals knowing the locations of their tunnels. The tunnels are located on only on a fraction of the border, mostly urban areas in CA & AZ, not the rural areas of CA/NM/AZ. With TX (1250+of 1900 miles) there is the Rio Grande. No one is tunneling under a river. 99+% of the border crossers aren't crossing through tunnels.

And remember there is zero chance at so called 'comprehensive immigration reform' until the border is secure however that is done and however long it takes.

Anyone serious about border security would put armed men on the border instead of a wall. I was not joking when I said it would be cheaper to set up Marine sentries with concertina wire along the border with Mexico than erecting a wall.

Shooting is cheaper and far more effective in a visceral sense. We have "do not cross or deadly force will be used" signs around the Groom Lake test facility (aka Area 51). How many YouTube videos are there of people who successfully made it inside the facility.

None. That's how many.

How much do Mexicans pay smugglers to get them across the border? I always wondered why they didn't just fly to Montreal or Vancouver and just walk to a liberal haven state (NY, VT, WA)? Would seem to be way more comfortable than smelling 40 other Mexicans' asses in the back of a box truck and then a hundred mile hump across the Sonoran Desert, dodging rattlesnakes and 110 degree temps.

Yeah that would be cheaper. Anything short of what the Israelis do (which includes concertina) is pretty much a waste, be it a wall or fence. Heck just concertina in the urban areas (where the illegals can quickly hide & blend in with the local populace) would be more effective and cheaper than the fencing/walls we have now. Look at the eastern European coubtries that have sealed their borders to the muslim hordes of refugees: they have mainly used concertina.

FWIW the Israeli barrier:
"....About 90-95% of the barrier will be constructed as a "multi-layered fence system"[24] with the IDF's preferred design having three fences, pyramid-shaped stacks of barbed wire on the two outer fences, a lighter-weight fence with intrusion detection equipment in the middle, an anti-vehicle ditch, patrol roads on both sides, and a smooth strip of sand for "intrusion tracking".[25]

The barrier contains an on-average 60-metre (200 ft) wide exclusion area.[26] The width of some sections is larger (up to 100 metres (330 ft)) due to topographic conditions.[27] The width of some sections (about 6% of the barrier) is 3 metres (9.8 ft) where the barrier is constructed as a concrete wall up to 8 metres (26 ft) high. These sections are narrower, require less land, and provide more protection against snipers. Wall construction is more common in urban settings..."

Sucks for the private citizens who own that land.

I guess we'll just need to imminent domain a good size buffer between the two countries.

Seize a million acres.

What are the current border easements and right of way restrictions? That would be helpful to know before you shed too many tears.

Federal easement on the border is 60 feet. (Roosevelt Reservation)

Do you think that's enough? I don't.

Prior sections of the border fence have had to use imminent domain.

And, where are your marines going to set up bases / camps?

This is precisely the sort of system I am envisioning. Concertina wire is good stuff. I've been completely entangled in it enough times to vouch for it. I have the destroyed utility uniforms and scars to prove it.

Well that looks like a half azz layout I assume somewhere in Europe. Looks like they were running short of concertina wire & stakes and/or didn't know how to construct a triple strand layout (2 rolls on the bottom, 1 on top, with anchoring stakes) that you're not going to as easily lift up to crawl under. And those male hajis going under that have been trained on dealing with concertina wire.

It's Hungary's.
