John, long-term you're probably right. More non-whites = more Democrats. The 2018 mid-term elections will be very interesting, although the Democrats have more red state Senate incumbents to defend than Republicans do in blue/swing states.

But for now, here's what the Republican party's achieved:
- President: 4 years of a Republican. If the Dems don't get a charismatic Bill Clinton/Barack Obama-type candidate for 2020 and the economy doesn't tank, then 8 years of a Republican.
- Congress: Republican controlled House and Senate. No effective Democratic veto power (thanks to Harry Reid) in the Senate. A House Speaker really of Trump's choosing - either Ryan or a Tea Party nominee. Either way the Tea Party calms down and doesn't keep throwing sand in the government gears (cuz their base has backed Trump, giving him the power to castrate the Tea Party Reps if they get in his way). And if nothing else Trump was instrumental in rendering Ted Boobs irrelevant.
- SCOTUS: No Merrick Garland in the Supreme Court. And when pancreatic cancer finally gets the best of Ginsberg (and it will), then another conservative SCOTUS justice. So now we're at 5 conservative justices. Anthony Kennedy's 80. Steven Breyer's 78. By 2020 you're likely looking at a court of Roberts, Alito, Thomas, and 3 other conservatives. By 2024 that number could total 7.
- A Day 1 roll-back of all Obama executive orders. A coordinated legislative/executive branch roll-back of Obamacare. A series of legislative implementations of core Republican positions and policies that will require full Democratic control of government to reverse.
- No Republican primary in 2020 and possibly 2024 (if Trump is reelected and Mike Pence is strong enough to beat back pre-primary challenges). This is bigly yuge. No recurring cycle of Republicans dissolving into extremist factions and destroying each other in circular firing squads.

I think you are kidding yourself. There may be disturbances and having Trump elected may stem the tide temporarily but the Judiciary is clearly evolving in a Liberal direction and conservatives clearly can't really depend on getting what they think they're going to get when they appoint somebody. Liberals can. But conservatives can't.

And what the Republicans just did set them back by years in a strategic sense.

I've been waiting for a discussion of the electoral college and haven't seen one. In recent history the Democrats have controlled two of the "Big 4" in that regard (California and New York) while the Republicans controled the other two (Texas and Florida). This year the Democrat won California by 28 percentage points and New York by 21 percentage points. The Republican won Texas by 9 percentage points and Florida by 3/10 of a percentage point.

The farthest I could go back and find State by State exit polling results is 2008 but even during that relatively short time frame the non White share of voters in Texas went from 37% to 43%. In Florida it went from 29% to 38% percent. In 2016 non White voters favored the Democrat by 65% to 29% in Texas and by 71% to 24% in Florida.

Florida is very close to becoming a reliably Democratic State in Presidential elections. Texas is inevitably headed to the same place unless the Republicans can find a way to eliminate the distaste most non Whites have for them. And the Republicans took a step backwards in that regard by rallying behind Trump for the short term thrill they're experiencing right now.

BTW nobody's going to stop the demographic trend through immigration restrictions. Non Whites that are already here have a higher birth rate.

The Republicans sacrificed their principles and also damaged their prospects for long term viability by rallying behind Trump for short term gain. And they got lucky too. We all know that without the email stuff and Wikileaks Clinton would've stomped him. If it had just been a matchup of candidates and ideas he'd have had no chance. This was not an endorsement of the approach Trump took or of Republican ideas.

Plus, again, he did not even win the popular vote in spite of all the crap that happened to Clinton. That should tell you something.

As I said in my previous post it's not going to unless something really significant changes with the way non Whites view Republicans. If such a change doesn't occur both Florida and Texas will inevitably move into the Democrat column where New York and California are now.

I guess you guys may think I"m disappointed because I'm anti Republican. I'm much more anti Democrat and I'm thinking of the long term. And I think that by rallying behind Donald Trump the Republicans seriously improved already good Democrat Party prospects in that regard. The Republican Party destroyed its credibility. It achieved an electoral college victory but the majority of the People don't want Trump in office. And it's a much more visceral rejection of him, I think, than it was for GW Bush (as bad as that was). It can say it doesn't want the White Nationalists but the White Nationalists are clearly part of the coalition that put Trump in office and eveyrbody can see that.

It was a huge, huge mistake to rally behind that guy. The smart strategic move for the long term would've been for Republicans who weren't in the Trump Cult during the primaries to reject him. But they bought into that short term "binary choice" crap. And they completely shot their image with the demographic groups that are increasing as a percentage of the population.

When I lived near Dallas, Tx, a Black city councilman loudly bitched about Hispanics getting minority contracts and funds. Apparently, the Brown people didn't, "earn" those benefits, as the Blacks did.

Has nothing to do with being sore. It's reality. Republicans really, really screwed up. I have been saying all along that the worse thing that could happen for both the Republican Party and the Country is for Trump to win. I also have been saying that it's possible that he could because Clinton was such a bad candidate.

Now the worst thing has happened. Do I wish it wouldn't have? Of course. But the reality is the reality. The days of the Republican Party being a viable check on Democratic Party power are numbered. And it's a smaller number than it was before the Republicans decided to nominate Trump.

Im not sure how your "GOP being a check on Democrats" theory works when Hillary Clinton appoints 3 SCOTUS justices.
