The extent to which media fail to understand sampling error and continue to look at ups and downs in polls as though they are looking at precise measurements continues to have me shaking my head.

So you agree the media is full of idiots?

Well, I don't know if they're idiots. They just keep looking at polls as though they're precise measurements. Like for instance that WSJ poll that came out this past weekend with Clinton up by 11 in the sample then they have a 1 day sample and it's a 7 point margin in the sample and start acting like that necessarily means something. The 11 point margin poll had a 4.5 pp margin of error for an individual estimate which means it had about a 9 point margin of error for the difference between the candidates. They just need to somehow start realizing how much "play" there is in polling numbers.

Now that Trump has burned any path to 270 (not that he had one before, really. Buffoons tend not to do well in national elections) ABCNews has decided that it's fine to look at Hillary's misdeeds again. Good story on the pay to play setup that was in place for relief money that went to Haiti following the earthquake (not the recent hurricane, although I'm sure it's still much the same). FOB's or FOC's were given priority in terms of getting in there and had full access to the State Department to facilitate this. Good read.

If the Democrats don't make a commercial or two or a few about Trump attacking Bill Clinton's female victims back in the 1990s I'll be disappointed. It really is low hanging fruit. There's more direct evidence of Trump attacking them than there is of Hillary doing it.

Just clip the "Paula Jones is a loser" thing. That itself would be good. Then get the actual video of the Cavuto interview where he attacks the other ones. This is a no brainer given how he's going after Hillary with what are unsubstantiated allegations on attacking the women. He's citing unsubstantiated allegations and he's on video attacking them himself. What a dumbass.

Is that really a slur, though, since he's a redneck as well? It's like various ethnic groups calling each other the worst words other groups can call them, it's like Hillary calling other people liars and crooks - I mean, if you are already that thing is it a problem?

Again, on the serious side though, every day just sees more and more separation from two large groups in this country - the know-it-all, liberal, professional elite, and the racist/sexist, undereducated bluish collar folks. They're all Americans, so the vitriol they view each other with is more and more disturbing. It's not going to change once Hillary wins the election, it's just going to keep getting worse and worse as it has with every election since 2000 (actually since 1996 - a lot of this scorched earth stuff started happening during the Bill Clinton administration, and it's just carried forward in every election since). Politics just keeps finding new lows.

I think the USA will cease to exist within a generation. Either another Civil War, or -- more likely -- a financial meltdown due to a failure to deal with entitlements and debt. :twocents:

This.
We did some great things. Put a man on the moon, invented and/or improved a number of sports that don't relegate us to just soccer, created fast food, the telephone, lights, kicked a lot of ass around the globe, and developed an absolutely beautiful chunk of land.

I don't think we should let someone else just step in after all that hard work. We should just nuke ourselves.

I'm not seeing the second option as a terribly bad thing. We are in need of a reset. And a lesson.

It's not over. I was just watching a segment about how we could be watching a Russian disinformation campaign that has effects. The guy said, in referring to the hacked e mail leaks, that the Russians will release information that seems relatively mundane and is legitimate. Then the information will evolve. And right at the last minute they'll release something totally false that has a big impact and there won't be time to respond to it. He said it's been done in other countries and named some. I think one was the Netherlands. Wish I had better memory so I could give more details. But I do suspect that's what's going on right now. I think the Russians are indeed engaging in a very sophisticated effort to throw this election to Trump and I am not at all discounting the possibility that it will work.

If it weren't for that I'd think it's over. But I do think that is out there and I think it makes things very uncertain.

BTW I don't think it's that they love Trump. I think it's an anti HIllary thing. For some reasons the Russians don't want HIllary to win.

No, you interrupted a perfect fin de siecle moment on this thread. Real Schopenhauer end of the world type stuff. Putin can't affect the election. His hackers are fuckups.
