Virginia DOT reminds drivers that although the posted speed limit is 70 mph
The real speed limit is 80 and this time we mean it...

Drove by many State Troopers in Minnesota driving 79 in a 70 zone and 70 in a 60 zone. North Dakota is a little tougher as I see people pulled over for doing 81 in a 75 zone. 10 MPH is generally the thresh-hold. I'm not sure if it changes from a speeding ticket to reckless driving over 80 though.

nnnnnnnnnnnnot really. I think it actually is letting people know that they are fucked over 80. Most states it's 20 mph over the posted limit to get reckless, but in this case it's only 10. I've definitely heard of people getting pinched on this. Everyone knows that 9 over and you are pretty much safe anywhere. 12 might get you pulled over if you're in the left lane passing, but I've gone by cops at 69 in a 55 many times and not been stopped.

Not just saying because I live nearby, but you do not speed in Virginia. They will put you in jail for 20 over. Happens all the time. Google it. There's a judge in Virginia Beach that is notorious for it.

I contested a ticket in Rappahannock County and ended up paying more.

They don't fuck around. Radar detectors are illegal there as well.

 Cop in Arlington baited me into a ticket years ago late at night. He white doored me for a mile on a 35mph road and I wasn't moving (hadn't been drinking). Came to a place where I had to get into the left lane to go over Chain Bridge and slowed down to 30 so I could get behind him... he slowed. I slowed down to 25, he slowed down, clearly he wanted me in front of him. I finally speed up to 35 to get in front of him right where the road goes down to 25. Lights. Fuck him. Turns out, he's notorious around those parts of Arlington. I went to court in the hopes he wouldn't post, but he did. Pulls me aside and asks WTF I was doing. Guy was a total prick. Ended up getting it reduced to warning.

Limit is 80 on most of I-15 and I-90 here now. Which means you can do 85-87 without worrying about a ticket.

I never got a speeding ticket in VA. And I was one of those drivers on the beltway that went the minimum suggested speed of "85 or GTFOOTW"

EDIT: I forgot, I did get one speeding ticket back in 98-99-ish, going from JMU to a funeral in Richmond on I-64. I think it was 77 in a 65.

They're the worst in the country and do not fight fair. They run traps at the bottom of hills, egg people on like you mentioned, and all other sorts of shenanigans.

The one I got in Rappahannock was a cop sitting in a hidden driveway just inside a 40 mph sign in a 25 zone. I saw the 40 sign (first time ever in that town) and started to speed up. He got me for 41 in a 25.

One of my best friends since high school is an Arlington cop. His standard is 20%. If you're under that, he won't bother. Over 20%, then he considers the conditions....i.e. wet roads, how many other cars nearby, time of day, skin color of driver, etc. He doesn't like to give speeding tickets unless it's truly reckless and dangerous to others.

I got stopped last week on my motorcycle in Arlington. Officer said he pulled me because I had El Salvador tags on it. I told him I was TDY in DC, the bike has only been out of the box and on the road for one week, and I have the Salvadoran registration and proof of insurance.

He said he was pretty sure I had to have US tags. I asked him if he pulls over snowbird Québécois too. He got mad and told me to wait and went back to his car (I know he was checking his code book and then on the radio asking his SGT)

He came back and told me that I had 30 days to get the tag changed and he better not see me after that with those tags again. I told him he better stay off George Mason Dr or he'll see me every day for the next two weeks and there will still be El Sal tags on the bike.

I didn't do the cocksucker the courtesy of telling him I'm a retired cop and know more about it than his rookie ass

Seriously though- what kind of jackass does that? When I used to come up on interesting situations like that I used to like to chat people up; get their (usually interesting) stories. This guy was just looking to break my balls and not in the least bit interested in what had to be a unique story about why some obviously un-Salvadoran dude was riding a 20,000 dollar American motorcycle with foreign tags

Of course 93, LDS has little room to talk. Don't speed anywhere in Sussex 6 months of the year. Plus, Bethany might have the worst parking Nazis anywhere. We were in town on Saturday for an arts festival. You'd think the town would want to make it a nice event.... I counted no less than 30 yellow parking Nazi shirts. They were writing tickets for people sticking 1' over the yellow line on parallel parking streets.

I was doing 78 in a 65 on I-85 this morning and a county sheriff Exploder came blowing past me doing 90. It was 7:50 and I guess he was going to be late for roll call (happens with this same jackass a couple of times a week when I see him - I know his plate #). He was doing 90+ and wasn't running radar so I gave him a football field and paced him for 12 miles until our exit, sometimes knocking on 100 mph. It's like the Indy 500 on my morning commute most mornings.
