Just to change it up a bit. (doesn't really have anything to do with the gambling issue).
And speaking of change, I'd like to see UNI not choke in the playoffs. heh.

I hope the NCAA doesn't follow through on this. It gives Montana and Delaware that much more incentive to leave FCS for FBS. It could make the whole division a lot less interesting.

Montana hosts playoff games because they deserve to, they have been the best team in the west for so long, ( FOR NOW ) it would actually be a shame to see Montana and MSU punished for thier state's gambling rules.

Re: Will the state of MT be banned from hosting playoff games?
Especially when people aren't betting on the outcome of college sports games... Fantasy football? Sports betting for bar tabs? WTF is the big deal? Oh no! I heard Cole Bergquist got paid off by some unruly gamblers to throw his week 12 fantasy football game! Now it all makes sense, why else would you bench Randy Moss and Adrian Peterson!?!?!Wildcat Ryan wrote:Montana hosts playoff games because they deserve to, they have been the best team in the west for so long, ( FOR NOW ) it would actually be a shame to see Montana and MSU punished for thier state's gambling rules.
Though a lot of FCS fans would like to see Montana play a first round game outside of Missoula, it's not going to happen until another team in the Big Sky decides to step up and knock them down. Until then, like Wildcat said, they deserve the home field advantage.

Re: Will the state of MT be banned from hosting playoff games?
Article from today's Missoulian. (side note, the Missoulian actually put a good paper together today, which is odd, it usually sucks Cap'n's balls.)
The University of Montana is concerned, but not yet panicked, about the possibility that Montana colleges and universities may no longer be allowed to host NCAA playoff games because the state allows some sports gambling.
“We're not going to yell the sky is falling until it hits us on the head,” said David Aronofsky, UM's chief legal counsel.
The NCAA said last week that it erred in allowing UM to host playoff games in 2008 because of a Montana law that violates the organization's stance on gambling on live sporting events. Montana allows sports pools and fantasy sports leagues, but prohibits betting on the outcome of live games.

Last I heard some NCAA committee will be discussing the issue in a couple weeks. Both MSU and UM have attorneys working on it and I heard the governors office is looking into it as well. Noone I've seen or heard quoted seems overly concerned based on the way Montana gambling law is written. It appears Stacey Osburn might have jumped the gun a bit with her comments (in other words she was talking out of her ass). I think it's going to be a tough battle for the NCAA to win this one. JMO

GOKATS is right. Reporters and fans that do not read into things are making this into a big shit storm when in fact it is nothing but a light breeze that will die down by the beginning of July. All will be well and no riots will be happening.GOKATS wrote:weberwildcat wrote:So no update on this til the season starts??

Re: Will the state of MT be banned from hosting playoff games?
Now we have a Montana Congressman involved.....................
Rehberg asks NCAA to rethink possile playoff ban
By The Associated Press
HELENA- U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg is asking the NCAA to rethink a rule which could disqualify football teams at Montana and Montana State from hosting playoff games.
State and university officials have been working to prove that a Montana's legalized betting on fantasy sports leagues does not violate the NCAA's stance against wagering on the outcome of sporting events. The NCAA has said the University of Montana should not have been allowed to host playoff games last season because the state allows a form of sports gambling.
In a letter to NCAA President Myles Brand, Rehberg said the playoffs in the Football Championship Series are highly coveted and done properly. He says it would be a shame if the NCAA punished players, fans and communities over the fantasy betting.
State university officials say the fantasy leagues, including one run by the Montana Lottery, are not the kind of sports betting the NCAA rule should be going after.

Good for him. It is absurd that they are lumping the Montana sports betting in with actually wagering on games.

Whatever happened to common sense?
There doesn't appear to be as much to go around as there used to be.
The NCAA has ruled that Montana can no longer host playoff football games because it is legal to make money playing fantasy football in the state.

Tell me if this makes any sense.
The state makes 10,000 bucks on the fantasy shit.
Missoula and the surrounding area loses 3 million bucks for every home playoff game that we do not host.

Re: Will the state of MT be banned from hosting playoff games?
There have been two rumor/stories I have heard from around town this week.
1. The NCAA rules regarding gambling do not come close to what the state of MT does and Montana sports teams should not be worried one bit.
2. The NCAA rules are so cloudy and convoluted that they can make anything seem like a violation if they put their minds to it. The NCAA will either ban MT sports teams from hosting playoff games until something is worked out, OR, the NCAA will ban the MT sports teams from hosting playoff games for the 2009 season while it is fought out and the playoff games will be restored in 2010.

Montana is a fraud
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

So is the decision final or are they still deciding?

Latest word is a "committee" from the NCAA is looking into, but nothing will be decided until August. The Montana attorney general doesn't see where there's any problem with Montana gambling laws and the NCAA rules.Wildcat Ryan wrote:So is the decision final or are they still deciding?

I dont think they will ban MSU or UM from hosting playoff games.

Neither do I (and I would have a real tough time arguing with a Pink Floyd fan, one of my all time favorite bands).Wildcat Ryan wrote:GOKATS wrote:
