True story - when I worked for the city we had to hire a garbage collector. The way the union contract was written the wage during the 6 month probationary period wasn't the best but once you got past that the pay was pretty good and the benefits were very good. The benefits started right away, only the wage was impacted during the probationary period. I had a guy get up and leave in the middle of an interview because, "the starting pay isn't much better than what I'm getting on unemployment right now. Why would I want to work?"

And unless they install a screen on a shovel millennials will never do it.

I don't think so. The book appears to be about growth in standard of living being very high from 1870 through 1970 then slowing down. The stuff I post about is data on household incomes 1979 through latest available. My thing is that people are better off now than they were back then.

And note that the author of the book you're talking about didn't say growth in standard of living stopped after 1970. Looks like he said it just slowed down. So saying people are better off now than they were in 1970 or 1960 or 1950 or where ever during whatever people think of as the "glory days" is not inconsistent with what he concluded. It's just that, if he's right, maybe they didn't make as much progress during the 46 years 1970 through now than they did during the 46 ears 1924 through 1970.

It was 1.5% higher for the bottom fifth, 2.7% higher for the middle fifth, and 6.9% higher for the top 1%.

So what the guy is saying, while interesting, is not inconsistent with what I've posted in the past at all. In general, people are better off now than they were in 1970. I've focused on 1979 because that's the starting point of the GAO estimates I've been looking at. But that table shows you could say the same thing about now vs. 1970.
