The illegals will end up doing it. Too many white people are too lazy or too "good" for a job that involves any manual labor. True story - when I worked for the city we had to hire a garbage collector. The way the union contract was written the wage during the 6 month probationary period wasn't the best but once you got past that the pay was pretty good and the benefits were very good. The benefits started right away, only the wage was impacted during the probationary period. I had a guy get up and leave in the middle of an interview because, "the starting pay isn't much better than what I'm getting on unemployment right now. Why would I want to work?" :ohno:

And unless they install a screen on a shovel millennials will never do it.
BS - down here there would be a line around the block for these kind of well-paying jobs.

There's very few black people where I live. And the ones I'm aware of all are good people and hard workers. Welfare cases around here are all white trash.

kalm wrote: JSO, you might want to read this book. It appears to blow a hole in your standard of living-quintile thingies.
I don't think so. The book appears to be about growth in standard of living being very high from 1870 through 1970 then slowing down. The stuff I post about is data on household incomes 1979 through latest available. My thing is that people are better off now than they were back then.

And note that the author of the book you're talking about didn't say growth in standard of living stopped after 1970. Looks like he said it just slowed down. So saying people are better off now than they were in 1970 or 1960 or 1950 or where ever during whatever people think of as the "glory days" is not inconsistent with what he concluded. It's just that, if he's right, maybe they didn't make as much progress during the 46 years 1970 through now than they did during the 46 ears 1924 through 1970.

It's better than it was in the 60s right now. Here's a quote from the linked article:
In other words, he is not predicting that living standards in the US will decline; rather he views it as likely that the growth rate of living standards will decline from its very rapid pace in the special century.
He's just saying things aren't getting better as fast as they used to. In that regard, here is a table from the article:

Image

See? It's not that things haven't continued to get better for people as time goes on. It's just that the rate at which they have gotten better has declined. If you do the math the table shows that the overall average personal disposable income was 3.5% higher in 2015 than it was in 1970 (inflation adjusted). It was 1.5% higher for the bottom fifth, 2.7% higher for the middle fifth, and 6.9% higher for the top 1%.

So what the guy is saying, while interesting, is not inconsistent with what I've posted in the past at all. In general, people are better off now than they were in 1970. I've focused on 1979 because that's the starting point of the GAO estimates I've been looking at. But that table shows you could say the same thing about now vs. 1970.

John, we established quite some time ago that these "fifths" of which you speak, and speak, and speak, are meaningless and arbitrarily selected to make the statistical jabber you're spewing appear to have meaning. Trust me, John, I was there.
