Sahara? :?
Yeah, wtf. I hate just doing the hot-foot boogie across 50 yards of beach to jump in the ocean. Couldn't imagine a country-sized beach with no water.

I thought that looks like a good theory so I tested it and...nope...it looks like how you answer really does matter. I just went through and tried to answer everything the opposite of the way I answered the first time. There is no opposite with the browser thing so I just picked internet explorer this time. I don't use that for recreational browsing because, for better or worse, I have an Apple. The result was indeed pretty much the opposite of what I got when I answered the questions honestly:

My wife has a video of me freaking out when I drove into New York City a little bit once. I had a conference in New Hampshire and took her with me. My driving directions took us via a route that stayed well away from New York City but my GPS indicated a route that took us through there. My wife wanted to take the New York City route so I complied.

It was night and we were driving across the George Washington Bridge and the GPS took us on the lower level. So we were under another level. I'm hunched foward gripping the steering wheel hanging on the GPS and it looks like spaghetti. All of a sudden it lost the signal. I freaked out. My wife started a video showing the sights rolling by. I think there was some kind of Yankee Stadium sign. And you can hear me in the background freaking out because I had no idea as to what to do.

Believe it or not I have a reputation for being very calm and even keeled. But one area I'm not like that in is driving in unfamiliar conditions. Like in a big city I don't know or in the snow. That sort of thing.

There is actually a fair bit of interesting research showing how people's politics correlates with their non-political tendencies. Stuff that has either been repeated or has some highly significant results. Would probably be up your ally, JSO.

I mean, we all know from experience that a guy with long hair that wears birkenstocks with tan socks that shops at whole foods and complains that the middle-sized town he's in has no "culture" is more than likely left of center.

With enough research you could probably develop a more reliable test for political tendencies than a self-reported survey.

I really didn't mind driving in NYC, just get in the mind set that there is no hurry to get anywhere. Subway was the best way to get around though. With my hobby of sports collecting, NYC would be a great place. On the opposite coast, California is about the only state with a mature sports collectible hobby. Chicago is the hub of the country, always having the best national conventions, so I'm glad to be within a days drive. Places on the northern far ends of the lower 48 or 57, depending on the president, like New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Washington, Oregon, are just to remote to the hobby for me to visit. If I'm going to visit a place with scenery, there's Alaska and many tropical islands.

Driving in NYC isn't that difficult. It's a grid pattern. You want a stressful drive, go to Paris. you have 3 official lanes, but the Parisians just create 5. Motorcycles and Vespa's weaving in and out. Nobody paying attention to lights or signs. You were on a bridge that crosses way uptown and just continues as 95. Drama queen. Sounds like your insecurity is the problem, not NYC. NYC has wonderful art, culture, sports, dining, etc... There's great music there. History.

My theory is that you avoid places you deem liberal.

Yes. 99% liberal. They should change the traffic jam color from red to blue on Google Maps for the DC area.

 Not quite. Both actually are bad in their own way, but there's a definite difference. For example, both Libs and Cons will cut you off in a heartbeat. Cons will do it to get in front of you because they want to go fast. Libs will do it because they don't want you in front of them, but they will do it slowly. You see a car lane trolling with a signal on... Lib. You see a car get out of the main lanes, punch it onto the merge lane and cut back in two cars ahead.... Con.

I find it interesting as well and equally for the out of character exceptions.

One of the wealthiest people I know prefers to golf in jeans and is somewhere slightly left of Bernie. Another friend's mother who is a retired forest service worker in Montana. She dresses like a hippie (birks, dresses, patagonia gear, drives a prius, raises, collects, and cans a good portion of her own food, and is a total conk who hates obama and the liberal hippies in Missoula.

I was closer to conservative than moderate, who knew ;) I don't agree that watching documentaries is a liberal thing, it depends on the documentary. Watching the documentary Avatar doesn't count ffs.
