Re: why does the GOP hate Social Security...
The reason to hate Social Security is that it is a Ponzi Scheme that cannot be sustained. It's wrong.
It's wrong to compel people to participate in a program for ensuring their retirement. It's wrong to FORCE the young to take care of the old. Social Security is just wrong on every level. It should never have been established and it is a millstone around the American neck in the long term.

When I began my working career in 1962 with a part time job as a senior in high school the DJIA was 724.71. When I hit retirement age in 2010 the DJIA was at 10,012.23. Since then the DJIA has gone to over 18,000. Why wouldn't I have wanted my money in the market vice Social Security? And if something dire had happened to me my family would have kept the money in the fund vice the SS $255 death "benefit" and condolences. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

You don't think you could have taken the 12.4% you were paying (6.2% employer, 6.2% employee, 12.4% if self employed) and done a better job investing it than the govt (where the return is 0% above inflation)?? It comes down to a matter of confidence. Democrats tend to think people aren't smart enough to manage their own investments and need government assistance in order to save for retirement. This belief couldn't be more wrong. With today's age based mutual funds and ETFs and Morningstar and other services to help evaluate their past results it is very easy to invest retirement and other funds.TheDancinMonarch wrote:When I began my working career in 1962 with a part time job as a senior in high school the DJIA was 724.71. The issue with Social Security is that it is a ponzi scheme. They give people more money then they've contributed plus the returns on those contributions. It is inevitable that at some point the money will run out.

Re: why does the GOP hate Social Security...
TheDancinMonarch got it exactly right. Here are the real numbers to show how bad it is. The difference is huge. When I started work in 1971 there was a 5-year window at the Lab where I worked allowing you to opt out of Social Security. I did some calculations and decided against SS. I wanted to see how well my calculations tracked, so I opened a brokerage account (later moved to Vanguard 500) and put what would have been my FICA deduction (only the employee portion, then about 5%) into that account every year. Today that account contains a little over 1.6 million dollars that typically spins off a healthy six-figure return, and will go to my agenda, not some politicians. The poor folks who were forced into SS have almost nothing, their money frittered away by the politicians. They will have to collect their “benefits” for almost 10-years to just break even in inflation adjusted dollars. And they do this to the lowest salary segment of the population! The Democrats, helping you to serfdom, one program at a time!
If I make it another 15 to 20 years the account should have between 4 and 7 million dollars in it. The money will eventually go into a super conductor engineering laboratory at a university. Thats my agenda! Where did the SSA money go? How could they manage to destroy so much wealth?
P.S. I had to laugh a little when I looked back at my old statement. The balance ending 1971 was $501.27.
