100K evacuted from Canada - Wildfires spreading

Post by dbackjon »

The wildfires raging through the Canadian province of Alberta have grown into a behemoth blaze that has consumed an area bigger than New York City.

It has now scorched 85,000 hectares — 328 square miles — Alberta provincial premier Rachel Notley said Thursday. By comparison, all five boroughs of New York City add up to just 304.6 square miles.

Notley warned that the 49 infernos, which forced the evacuation of the city of Fort McMurray, could spread and devour more territory because "conditions are still tinder dry."

"Because so much of this is dependent on the weather ... that means that certainty is not a feature of any statements at this point," Notley said when asked if the worst of the fire was over. "Until we've got it under control, it would not be responsible to make any declarations."

There was a chance of rain in the forecast Thursday for Fort McMurray. But it appeared a deluge was needed to stop the intense wildfires that have already forced some 88,000 people to flee — the biggest evacuation in the province's history — and destroyed more than 1,600 homes and buildings.

This is the center of the environmentally nasty oil sands region.

Ironic that climate change brought about by fossil fuels is destroying a city built on extraction of them.

Wow. That's a stretch - those apologetic Canucks must have really pissed off God to get him to rain down the fire and brimstone on them.

Should we condemn the SoCal folks for earthquakes, landslides, and fires fueled by Santa Ana winds? How about we EC(b)ers for hurricanes, or our Midwestern friends for tornadoes?

Not comparable.

There is record heat in far north Canada. Record Drought. Both are enhanced by global warming, which is mainly a product of our usage of fossil fuels.

Oil Sands, in particular, are about as bad for the environment as you can get - look up the process, and educate your self on the damage this does to the world.

All weather is a direct cause of climate change. In a few years it will be illegal to suggest otherwise. Ironically pushed by the same people who denounce Trump as a threat to our freedoms.

Attorney Generals from across the nation gearing up to prosecute climate change "deniers". :?

Unprecedented Coalition Vows To Defend Climate Change Progress Made Under President Obama And To Push The Next President For Even More Aggressive Action
Attorneys General From California, Connecticut, District Of Columbia, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Washington State And The US Virgin Islands Agree To Coordinate Efforts

Schneiderman: Climate Change Is The Most Consequential Issue Of Our Time. This Unprecedented State-To-State Coordination Will Use All The Tools At Our Disposal To Fight For Climate Progress
NEW YORK – Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today joined Attorneys General from across the nation to announce an unprecedented coalition of top law enforcement officials committed to aggressively protecting and building upon the recent progress the United States has made in combatting climate change.

Attorneys General Schneiderman, William Sorrell of Vermont, George Jepsen of Connecticut, Brian E. Frosh of Maryland, Maura Healey of Massachusetts, Mark Herring of Virginia, and Claude Walker of the US Virgin Islands were joined by former Vice President Al Gore for the announcement in New York City. Today’s announcement took place during a one-day Attorneys General climate change conference, co-sponsored by Schneiderman and Sorrell.

The participating states are exploring working together on key climate change-related initiatives, such as ongoing and potential investigations into whether fossil fuel companies misled investors and the public on the impact of climate change on their businesses. In 2015, New York State reached a historic settlement with Peabody Energy – the world’s largest publicly traded coal company – concerning the company’s misleading financial statements and disclosures. New York is also investigating ExxonMobil for similar alleged conduct.
Arizona is a big ass desert because of "climate change" amirite? :suspicious:

Any record drought, high temperature, low temperature, number of named storms, rainfall in a 24 hour period, etc. is attributed to man made climate change by the envirowhackos. Could it be we're in the midst of a long term global weather trend analogous to the ice age? Maybe the Neanderthals should have raised more cattle and farted more to get the temperatures to rise and improve their weather?

Educate yourself a little on climate oscillation before you automatically jump to the lefty climate change dogma.
There are close correlations between Earth's climate oscillations and astronomical factors (barycenter changes, solar variation, cosmic ray flux, cloud albedo feedback, Milankovic cycles), and modes of heat distribution between the ocean-atmosphere climate system. In some cases, current, historical and paleoclimatological natural oscillations may be masked by significant volcanic eruptions, impact events, irregularities in climate proxy data, positive feedback processes or anthropogenic emissions of substances such as greenhouse gases.

The fact there are 100,000 people that far north of the border outside of Edmonton is surprising.

And yes, the climate change/tar sands thing is ironic.

Nothing there about prosecuting climate change deniers, but going after fraud. Which is what AG's do.

Naw, I like Canadians, they are smart enough to know that this one single fire will pump more pollution into the environment and atmosphere in a couple weeks than the entire planet can legislate from going into the atmosphere the next 3 years combined.

Science is a biotch amirite!

Fraud

Reading comprehension is your friend, princess. These idiots are targeting companies because they believe Exxon and friends, "purposely misled investors and the public about the risks of climate change". That ain't fraud sweetie. That's targeting someone for not being an alarmist.
