There's no doubt that groups go overboard with things but preserving the Earth for future generations is hardly a bad idea. The alternative is to be selfish pricks. Which one do you want to be?

I don't think it's a bad idea to preserve the Earth for future generations. In fact I think it's essential. But I don't think the mentality behind Earth Day goes well beyond that. For instance I think it includes the idea that we should go to any length to make sure no species goes extinct.
