Yes. Yes it is. It's exactly what it's about. It's about saving the planet we live on to hand off to our future generations.

Why do people like you have such a selfish view of the world that you feel that you are more important than future generations? I personally would like to keep this whole life-on-earth deal going as long as we can.
No Hen it is not. You can believe me or not but my opinion comes from being in the environmental and biological sciences field for 33 years now. Watching people around me. It's not about what's best for OUR species. There is a preservationist mentality. Like for instance if it comes down to what is best for our species vs. having the Delta Smelt going extinct there's going to be pressure to go in favor of preventing the Delta Smelt going extinct.

They will try to cast it as "what's best for that is best for us." But that's not really what's going on.
How many humans were harmed in exchange for the Delta Smelt being preserved?

How would Jesus feel about conservation?

Seriously....you're not really a scientist are you?

But you are a MASTER troll...and I will give you that.

Yes I am really a scientist. I don't think there's anything to indicate that the Jesus character, if he really existed, gave a flip about conservation.

I know you are aware of the issues surrounding the Delta Smelt. Maybe you're not defining "harm" in terms of economics. But surely you know the efforts to save the Delta Smelt have caused adverse economic impacts on some humans.

But, just in case, here is one short article on the issue:

Here's the deal:

Preservationists say that we save ourselves by having things like the Endangered Species Act. The great web of life is in perfect balance and if we destroy a species we risk catastrophe. Also a species dying is like a canary in a coal mine. We allow it to happen at our peril.

But that's a bunch of crap. There is no static balance. Never has been. Things are always changing. Species have always been going extinct. It's frequently noted that more than 90 percent of species that have existed on this planet are extinct right now. I actually think it's more than 99%.

It's pretty much self evident that life can go on just fine if species go extinct. The dodo bird. The passenger pigeon. The marsupial wolf. On and on. The world didn't come to and end. The great web of life didn't spin out of balance and destroy us.

But what it comes down to is that's not really what's going on anyway. If you really pin the preservationists down the truth is that they just don't want things to go extinct. If you ask them if they would rather have a million people lose their jobs than have the Delta Smelt go extinct even if it's given that the Delta Smelt going extinct really won't change anything with respect to how our own species does they're going to say they'd rather see a million people lose their jobs.

I've seen that mentality over and over again.

I don't care much for "Earth Day" because it's another in a long list of one-off events where people pretend to care for a cause.

Getting little Jimmy to plant one tree in the back yard isn't going to change much of anything. Especially when you have completely sovereign nations, China, who couldn't give two shits about their pollution levels.

As it has been said, celebrating "feel good" actions of little substance. One day a year where liberals can flex there idea of moral superiority, and then right back to the nonchalant, indifference for the other 364 days of the year.
And don't give me that, "it raises awareness" bullshit either, all you have to do is look outside your damn windows to be able to see what's going on in the world.

No, dummy. It means take care of our planet so that we can enjoy it. I figured someone that enjoys spending time in nature would want to make it livable.

As I said, it's about preservationism. It's not about preserving the planet for our enjoyment. This is what I mean:

I think the idea ought to be to think about what's best for our own species. That's all that matters. And that includes things like preserving "nature" things we like to do. You know, preserving your opportunity to fish, etc. Keep "natural" places so you can go enjoy the scenery, etc., to an extent that is reasonably possible without harming the interests of others.

But I don't think that's what's behind Earth Day. I think the mentality behind Earth Day is preserving things as they are no matter what. So, for example, you have all this angst associated with the Delta Smelt.

I think you think wrong about the way I think. But the way I think you think might also be wrong.

Just think about that for a bit.

Gay
I visited Ibanez in Charleston. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's gay, but he did offer to hold my penis when we were both at the urinals.

That was awkward.

What so gay about a man holding another mans penis at the urinal? :suspicious:

You didn't seem to mind the aromatherapy massage.

Part of my judgement about the way you think on this matter would depend on your answer to this question:

Do you think we should be going through all the hoops we're going through to preserve the Delta Smelt or do you think we should say, "Screw the Delta Smelt. What would be necessary to save it is not justified by the benefit of doing so?"

There's no doubt that groups go overboard with things but preserving the Earth for future generations is hardly a bad idea. The alternative is to be selfish pricks. Which one do you want to be?
