I want to make sure you aren't using the Declaration of Independence for anything other than what it is: an 18th Century "Dear John" letter to King George.
The Declaration of Independence is this nation's founding document. It is the document that declares the general principles. The Constitution is not. It is a Standard Operation Procedure. The Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution, represents the "soul" of the nation to be established.

The DoI may represent the "soul", but the Constitution is the LAW. There's a huge difference. The DoI is a list of grievances, not a governing document. The Constitution is a government charter written and ratified by the states.

The Declaration of Independence is just that, it's us telling Great Britain they don't rule us anymore and why. The Constitution is the government that we decided to have and found our nation on after Great Britain no longer ruled us. The Declaration is not the founding document for the nation, heck, it didn't even call itself a nation as it still referred to the states as individual states. You're just getting it wrong.
I thought my "Dear John" analogy was sufficient. Clearly, it was not good enough for JSO.

Perhaps I should have said, "Dear George." :coffee:

It's a long thread so why don't you quote your original post.

Also...what Ganny just said.
Fundamentalist Religion - in its most distilled form - is Bigotry...
and
Bigotry and pathological "isms" (Sexism / Racism / etc.)
cannot be legislated OUT of peoples minds

Fundamentalists will fight with their last dying breath
to keep this world in a state of perpetual fear and hatred
through ancient text and iron age ignorance

its what fear and hatred do... (see: Islam)

The way you defeat those things is through enlightened responses
Not Hate-on-Hate battles of equal portions making both sides appear insane

In America the Religious Fundies are desperate for a seat at the big-boy table
Adults typically do not actively engage in arguments with 4 year old children

Which is where D-back has taken this debate...
Whoever takes the high ground and least emotional ground will win this
This makes sense. Thx.

Gentlemen:

What holiday do we consider be be a celebration of the birth of the United States? During what year did we celebrate the United States bicentennial? I just did a Google search on "Birthday of the United States." Here is what came up at the top of the page:
July 4th, 1776
14% of survey complete.
When is the birthday of the United States of America? “ July 4th, 1776” any first grader would answer.
Now, let's see...what document was signed on July 4, 1776?

And it wasn't just a "Dear John letter." It included a statement of the broad principles underlying the foundation of the nation we now know as the United States.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

The simplest most effective way to combat idiotic legislation
is NOT to raise holy hell and start a name calling contest
But
To point out the simple truth about the legislation
In some cases the agenda has been pushed too hard
and to expect no push back is unreasonable

Fundamentalists are terrified of the new world
and the gay community has been both effective and at times overbearing
This will all play itself out
Q: Name something that offends Republicans?
A: The actual teachings of Jesus

Yes but it was clearly implied that it only applied to straight white males from LA who raised deaf sons. DUH. :coffee:

Like in olden times when a mining company owns everything in town? Do those exist in the last 100 years?

Yes..I chose an olden times examples, sue me, Andy... :tothehand:

(Although one can make a case that towns still exist where one company is dominant to the point of controlling local politics from the school board to zoning laws. And companies like Google and Microsoft offering all of life's necessities on-campus also bares some similarities. )
