The deposits are like a $134 million interest free loan to Tesla....

I think they are up to 180,000 deposits in the first 24 hours

I honestly don't mind letting them use $1,000 of my money. :thumb:

The car does look sweet. What will the price tag be once you add on the autopilot and summon features? And if they already have 180,00 orders isn't the federal subsidy in danger of going away? I thought it starts to phase out after 200k cars sold, and that includes all the cars they've sold to date plus the ones between now and when these cars start to be delivered.

Oh, can any of these cars other than the Model S charge at those fancy charging stations they have spread all over now?

And how reliable are parts and how easy is it to get stuff fixed that is under warranty?

These cars scream royal PITA to me.

Yes.

This was an interesting read. Looks like there is already generational Tesla envy developing. The snobby S owners are looking at the lowly 3 newbs with scorn  :

Could be a nice investment. If Tesla becomes a major automaker for the long haul, you might be able to say you owned their version of the Model T.

But among the things you may not know about Tesla is this: The Model S requires almost no maintenance.

Like pretty much any battery-electric vehicle, a Model S lacks many of the components that go wrong in gasoline cars.

Without the valves, camshafts,a crankshaft, connecting rods, gears, clutches, and more found in a gasoline car, the Tesla Model S, like any battery-electric car, needs almost no almost no regular adjustment.

About the only parts that need regular replacement are four tires and two windshield wiper blades.

Even brake pads, which you might expect to need regular replacement on such a high-performance car, last many times longer than those on comparable gasoline cars.

That's because the bulk of a Tesla's slowing power comes from regrenerative braking, or turning the motor into a generator to recharge the battery pack, slowing the car in the process.

The friction brakes are still there for hard or panic braking, of course, but they're used only a fraction as much.

(The same is true for hybrids, by the way. Ask your nearest Prius owner how long their brake pads last.)

A German study found that over eight years, battery-electric cars will be one-third less expensive to maintain--and many analysts view that as conservative.

They need to make a pickup truck.

No, they need a hatchback model (maybe they already do?). Light pick up trucks are useless, and a real truck probably isn't feasible for Tesla's business model...but we've been down this road with you already.
