Yes, in general, but not always associated with wage increases.

I'm always curious about "what goes up" in price if minimum wage goes up...

Do car prices go up, does Toyota raise their prices..?
Does Rent go up..?
Does electricity and water go up..?

Honestly I don't know - its been a long time since any of that mattered to me
But it always makes me think, well what exactly "goes up" ..?

about 5 years ago when minimum wage was all the rage in the popular debate
There were a few articles about how it wouldn't effect the giant companies like Wal-Mart or McDonalds
because they have very few full time employees and offer no benefits for part time employees

Its hard to find those articles now (you need to refine your search)
because there's 10 NEW ARTICLES every day on minimum Wage increases...
so all the original noise is buried way back there

Here's one that's still around:

 mildly f*cking with you

while: Trying to find the old articles about wages and major corporations
I think the Wall Street Journal article from about 5 years ago got pulled for not being accurate
as have quite a few other articles arguing that McDonalds and Wal-Mart would be unaffected by minimum wage

It still doesn't change my curiosity about basic wages

Normally what would go up would be the price of everything. If everyone can afford more from a wage increase, then people will sell more. When people sell more things, they then think about raising the costs of those things so they can make more money on the increased demand. That's always why the push behind a minimum wage increase is always a bit hollow - in the end, prices rise (inflation) with the increases in wages, so ultimately, the buying power of those getting those wage increases is unchanged. But, it makes politicians feel good that they did something, regardless of the outcome.

As for McDonald's not necessarily charging more, well, it's also because there are other factors on price. McDonald's is already hurting because of the cost to refurbish much of its stores (other chains have done it, like Wendy's, so McDonald's had to keep up) and because of the general drop in demand for the type of fast food McDonald's serves. The market is shrinking for them, for many reasons, so pumping up prices and driving off customers isn't necessarily something they can do at the moment.

Also a lot of union wage scales are tied to the minimum wage. So raise the minimum wage, raise the entire wage scale.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB100014241 ... 1000422454

And even wage scales that aren't tied to minimu wage go up. Imagine the fed minimum wage increases about 40% from $7.25 to $10 an hr. Since the people making $7.25 are now making $10, then the people who had been making $10 are also going to want a 40% increase to $14. And the people who were making $14 are then going to want their 40% increase..etc, etc..

Labor is a certain percentage of the costs of goods & services. The ripple effect will cause a price increase in most goods and services above what it would have been without the min wage increase..

I bet if you compared the 30 states that have a higher than fed minimum wage to the 20 states that don't, the avg labor costs and avg price of good and services will be higher in the 30 states with higher than fed min wage compared to the 20 states that don't..

How are those 30 states doing economically and from a standard of living perspective? How are the schools, roads, etc? Are they suffering under the yoke of workers making too much?

At some point doesn't demand and inflation from wage increases slow down?

Stumbled across an old article today about how in Seattle that employees who are getting that $15/hr wage are asking for LESS hours because they're now making too much income and in danger of losing their low cost/free housing subsidies.

And now a few are advocating that the poverty line be raised so they could still qualify for it.

We had this tiny Mexican dive across from campus. It sat about 8 at the bar and another 8-10 at tables. It was highly Americanized Mexican food which was awesome since this was my introduction to the cuisine. They served pitchers (large and small) of beer also. I was with a friend one day and he said that it was the 4th meal he ate there that week. Another friend was shocked. Then I revealed that I had 7 meals there in a week about two weeks earlier.

The place was leveled to make room for the basketball arena in the early 2000's. A legendary hangout was lost. :(
Several of my friends have tried to reproduce the recipes at home but with not much luck. I stumbled across the recipes on an obscure message board a couple of years ago. Unfortunately the quantities were listed in buckets, cans, etc. :? Been playing around with it for a while and am getting close. :thumb: 8-)
