A lot of possibilities here. I don't know if many of you are aware, but NDSU has been in this game before. ;) Still, Jacksonville State might be the most talented FCS team the Bison have played. The first big question is whether Carson Wentz will play. I think Eli Jenkins is better than either Easton Stick or a rusty Wentz, but JSU has no depth at that position. The second question is whether the Gamecocks can force NDSU into passing situations, which will be particularly important if Stick starts. JSU hasn't seen NDSU's level of power offense, but their defense is not undersized—it's a 3-4, but they have two DTs that weigh 320+, a starting DE that weighs 290, and a "Bandit" LB that weighs 260. The third question is whether the Bison can contain Jacksonville State's big plays. Troymaine Pope is averaging a crazy 8.4 ypc and was eviscerating teams in the first three rounds of the playoffs, so he should definitely be NoDak State's primary focus. The fourth and final big question is whether Bison K Cam Pedersen can pull his head out of his ass and actually make some field goals. NDSU is 1/7 in the playoffs after going 9/13 in the regular season, while the Gamecocks have made 5 in a row after going 12/22 prior to that. I see this as a high-volatility coin flip, but I just can't in good conscience pick a team above the DIII level to win their 5th. straight championship. My track record in FCS championship games isn't very good, though, so take this for what you will.

Here's my assessment of the matchups & my pick for the game:

      • Quarterbacks -- (push)

        Running Backs - Jacksonville St.

        Receivers/TEs - Jacksonville St.

        Offensive Line - (push)

Defensive Line - North Dakota St.

        Linebackers --- Jacksonville St.

        Secondary ---- North Dakota St.

        Kicking ------ Jacksonville St.

        Punting ------ North Dakota St.

Return Teams - North Dakota St.

        Kickoffs ------ North Dakota St.

        • Jacksonville St. 24-21 North Dakota St.

Irritating but true story about the local newspaper here. In the Friday sports section they give a listing of sports on TV for the weekend. Guess what game didn't make it? :ohno:

I am hopeful. I still think North Dakota State came through a much tougher bracket. I think playing Montana, Northern Iowa, and Richmond was a much tougher road than playing Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, and Sam Houston State. And of course I think North Dakota State played a much tougher OVERALL regular season schedule by virtue of being in the MVFC vs. being in the OVC. Auburn is better than any single team North Dakota State played. But I think North Dakota State is far more "week in, week out" battle tested.

Gil Dobie wrote:Pleasantly surprised the Bison are on a drive for 5. Before the season, it looked like a rebuilding year, and even more like that, after the Montana game. Defense lost 9-10 starters from last year. Looks like the youngsters have improved since that first game. Still not a dominating Bison team as the last few years, hopefully good enough to beat Jack St.
The Bison had 5 returning on defense this year.

Weather forecast is cold and windy but dry. And yes I know it's balmy by Fargo standards but by Southern standards a high temperature of 41 is a cold day regardless of time of year.

Yes I know North Dakota State plays in a dome but still like looking at it. During the actual body of football season, or September through November, monthly daily average temperatures range from 83 to l64 in Jacksonville and from 71 to 37 in Fargo. Curious: Does North Dakota State also practice indoors? I imagine they have been recently because it's REALLY cold up there now but during the season where do they practice?

Bison up 10-0. Gamecock pass defense letting them down so far.

It's the second quarter and JSU has only had the ball once.

Ok I think North Dakota State ought to start Wentz.

Is there even any point in watching FCS football anymore? :?

And don't give me the "move up to FBS" answer. G5 FBS is even more pointless. :ohno:

Well, since I'm pulling for the Bison I'm still nervous about it because Jacksonville State has lots of big play potential in its skill players. But it's going well so far for sure.

24-0 at the half. Wentz did get picked late, but there wasn't enough time for JSU to do anything with it.

Maybe the Bison will pull an Oregon?

After watching that Oregon vs. TCU bowl from start to finish I'm not taking anything for granted. I feel pretty good about North Dakota State not letting that happen but one never knows.

Sure there is. Yes North Dakota State is having a historic run and it may be about to become even more historic but to do it they have to get through a real playoff tournament. And they have had some close calls during this run. They just have found a way to get it done.

One can never really know but this is certainly consistent with what I wrote early on when somebody posted that wheel thingy showing the brackets. My response was that the brackets were WAY unbalanced with the side that North Dakota State was on being the much tougher bracket.

I also am back to thinking Jacksonville State was over rated. The only thing I saw that was really inconsistent with thinking that was how bad they beat Sam Houston State. I have no explanation for that. Sometimes stuff like that happens. But I don't know if Jacksonville State would even have made the playoffs if they'd been playing in the MVFC. Of course you can say that about a lot of champions of other conferences including my own favorite the Southland.

I thought early on about posting a thought i had while watching this game early but didn't want to jinx things. Now I can say it:

Hey Jacksonville State. This ain't the OVC.

No, that's just silly. JSU has arguably more talent than any other team in FCS and they took a bowl-winning SEC team to overtime. They just played like crap today, in large part thanks to Carson Wentz.
