I think you've read too much about him on Kos. Yup, probably the biggest reason why we always seem to gravitate towards two parties. This guy's point was that VERY few people are truly independent and I agree with that. Just because you don't vote straight ticket or register for a party, that doesn't make you an independent. If a third party or a candidate was EXACTLY spot on with YOUR thinking, that means they would be repulsive to an awful lot of people... more than agree with you.
It's not appealing to me either, but it's the world in which we live and it's going to be REALLY hard to change that. Regardless, we really don't even have two parties at this point.
The whole idea of parties is becoming less and less appealing as I become more and more cynical.
