Get rid of the cultural dogma about something being "wrong" with people wanting to get high and tell the pharmaceutical companies they can develop and market drugs designed specifically for getting people high while doing minimal ancillary damage. If we did that I'm confident they could come up with things that would make the situation much better for all concerned.
That's a brave, new world you are describing there JSO.

Cigarette smokers have a choice too, but it's a hard one to make since the manufacturers do everything they can to make them addictive. You honestly think the same thing wouldn't happen here?

Maybe. I started Brave New World once but didn't get very far. It would seem having the liberty to choose what you put in your body is different than control through making life easier. But I suppose a population of doped up addicts would be pretty damn easy to control.

Speaking of which...part of JSO's point is the hypocrisy that we're already hopped up on legalized speed, sleep aids, and heroine. I know chronic pain sufferers who are absolute addicts on Dr. prescripted meds and several people who use Sudafed for energy or diet pills.

But put the "illegal" tag on a substance and it's the devil.

I don't disagree on the hypocrisy part, but as I've said for years, saying something is no more dangerous than something else legal does little to convince me of the case to make it legal. IMO it's more a reason to make the legal item illegal.

Sure. But let's start with tobacco. I've known people who go to AA and NA religiously, but chuff down cigarettes like a machine.

If you'd like to speak in hyperbole, I guess that means you think heroin, PCP, LSD, cocaine, etc... all should be legal and be allowed to be produced by pharma companies?

People will find ways to get fucked up at the expense of harming themselves.

Decriminalize all simple drug possession, treat it as a health issue which is what it is.

Reasonable "intent to distribute" laws.

So you're OK imposing some laws and you are the decider on what is reasonable and what is "nanny state". Gotcha. Also, why would it be illegal to distribute something that is not illegal?

1) Some "intent" laws go overboard.

2) And yes, I'm OK with some laws. I'm not an anarchist. And yes of course, I should be the decider.

3) Depends on the substance. Some drugs like Ketamine have legit medical uses but also recreational abuse problems. Prison isn't the solution for the user but the distribution of the chemical should be well regulated.

No :tothehand:

Some drugs should be legal and some should be illegal
and it should be based entirely on misinformation and political lobby strength
also: Common sense will not be applied
