Another article on programming conundrums... should the cars have fuzzy logic that allows them to break laws to avoid accidents?

BTW... and this is a promise..

If I see Clitz one day tooling along in his Google car, sipping his latte... or any other person for that matter...

You KNOW I am going to fvck with that car... drive too close, cut it off, etc

it will be the new hobby

Its not about regular people owning self driving cars...
Its about the elderly and the disabled being granted some additional freedom

I'm only going to explain this 100 more times
Self driving cars is not about regular healthy people having some ridiculous cheese puff vehicle
its about those who cannot

hey Clizzorous

why don't you answer the real, interesting question - the one about how to program the logic. I know there's no immediate answer but its an interesting topic

I remember bringing up the point in one of Chizz's other self-driving cars threads that when programming something really complex like this it's almost always a given that you will overlook something...which is why a lot of computer software typically has thousands of man-hours of beta testing.

So these cars haven't killed anyone yet...super. Eventually the Google programmers could run into a lot of the same conundrums that a lot of very smart people in AI research have been trying to resolve for a long time now. If they don't run into the issue in fixing this problem they could run into it fixing a whole new set of problems arising from their solution to this problem.

The question is...can you truly make driving into an algorithm, or are breakthroughs in AI going to be required in order to make self-driving cars work well enough that they will be accepted?

"Driverless Cars Give Lawyers Bottomless List of Defendants

Imagine a robot car with no one behind the wheel hitting another driverless car. Who’s at fault?

The answer: No one knows. But plaintiff’s lawyers are salivating at the prospects for big paydays from such accidents. If computers routinely crash, they say, then so will cars operated by them. And with no one behind the wheel, lawyers say they can go after almost anyone even remotely involved.

“You’re going to get a whole host of new defendants,” said Kevin Dean, who is suing General Motors Co. over its faulty ignition switches and Takata Corp. over air-bag failures. “Computer programmers, computer companies, designers of algorithms, Google, mapping companies, even states. It’s going to be very fertile ground for lawyers.”..."
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/ ... defendants" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another reason driverless cars are a dumb idea...

Ultimately, when these things do come into fashion widely, it's more likely that cars with drivers won't be allowed on those roads. Think Minority Report, the cars with drivers are for out in the country - anywhere with a decent population size will be driverless.

If Cleetz had the answer to this question... every car company in the world would be in a bidding war for Cleetz's algorithm and he would be worth billions. :coffee:

I'm a big fan of SpaceX and I think that although they have some roadblocks ahead, they can in fact provide some alternatives for NASA.

I find a couple things amusing though-

Liberals LOVE themselves some private enterprise when it comes to SpaceX, and NASA is one of the few places where they realize that the government isn't the best option

Liberals also love the idea of the competing space companies driving down costs

200 years from now they'll tax SpaceX into oblivion- pointing to launch pads in Cape Canaveral and saying "you didn't build that"

I've laid down NASA as an example of positive government spending several times over the years. There are literally thousands of inventions used now in everyday life that came from the moon landing alone.

Liberals like Musk because his companies at least have the appearance of being progressive - alternative energy, space exploration, pissing off brick and mortar car dealers, etc.

I don't know whether government is the best option any more, but I can admit government got things off the ground, competition is good, and yes...WE did build that.

Have you already forgotten the outrage from conks when the Obama administration shut down the space shuttle program? Wait, of course you have.

I guess that's why they're testing this with unmanned rockets first.

But you're right, the civilians dying thing has really killed commercial flight.

Are you trying to criticize SpaceX or Google's self-driving cars? Because those are two completely separate and unrelated things. :suspicious:
