Just received my 2009 Sporting News College Football 09 Annual in the mail. The top 25 preseason poll:
1. Richmond
2. Appalachian State
3, Villanova
4. UNI
5. Montana
6. Southern Illinois
7. Weber State
8. New Hampshire
9. Elon
10. JMU
11. Central Arkansas
12. W&M
13. E. Washington
14. Maine
15. Cal Poly
16. UMass
17. Montana State
18. Wofford
19. McNeese State
20. Ga Southern
21. N. Ariz
22. Colgate
23. Samford
24. Jacksonville State
25. SCSU
Alright my take:
-Maine and Umass should not even be in the top 25. Maine because they barely got into the playoffs last year (when there were plenty of other teams with better records) and Umass just because i think the loss of their QB will be to much for them this year.
-Northern Arizona i believe is also ranked to high, they were overrated last year and i think they are again this year.
-Montana State is a surprise but not exactly shocking as the Bobcats are returning alot of talent this year and are playing in a conference that has made leaps and bounds in terms of competiveness these past few years. (except for ISU).
-Richmond should not be number one. Yes they were the champions last year but they did lose alot of people including their starting and star RB. They should be in the top ten but not #1.

Which team hasn't had graduations??? Who would you put in the #1 slot...
I think your WCB* is showing...us Easterners are getting sick and tired of the rampant WCB* on these boards...
Richmond football returns 18 of 24 starters (including kickers) from a 2008 team that won the Football Championship Subdivision title...With their Linebacker (Sidbury) the key loss...Me thinks they are the pre-season #1 easily...They only had 11 seniors last year...and will have 21 seniors this year...
* that felt good

Umass - fair argument - I have them at 25.
Maine - no argument against excluding Maine from the top 25. There was exactly one team that had a better body of work last year that got snubbed - William & Mary. W&M and Maine were the only teams that earned that 16th spot. Both of them return a ton of players this year. I don't see how you can say they don't belong.
Especially because you seem to OK with the inclusion of NAU and MSU - neither of which even sniffed the playoffs last year (6-5 and 7-5 respectively).

Why is Richmond #1? Any Spiders on here? Did no players graduate from 2008?
NAU could be top 25, but I would like them to prove they belong. Earlier tests this year.
With NAU and MSU in the top 25 does that just mean the Big Sky is just that good compared to the rest of the nation? We really only have one crap team - Idaho State.
So McNeese over Texas State? UCA that high? Most people have the Bobcats and Cowboys at one and two in the conference. UCA looks to rebuild after losing there steller QB.
Texas St returns a very strong offense. UCA will be 3rd or 4th in conference I bet.

Doesn't mean anything when NAU and MSU don't belong in the Top 25.

I don't think you can make that statement with absolute certainity, especially in the preseason. Both COULD be top 25 teams - as likely as about 25 others.
Once you get past the top 10-15 teams, it is usually a crap shoot.
Great thing about FCS - it works itself out in the end.

True. I should have said it doesn't mean anything when NAU and MSU arguably don't belong in the Top 25.

And you would classify UNC (who wins one game a year) as what?

Alright first off WCB my ass, coming from several posters who all they do is bash the west and favor the east, thats called hypocrisy. I would have App state first just because of all talent they are returning and. Second of all i also said that NAU didnt belong in the top 25 so maybe you guys should read a bit more carefully before accusing my of such. And however i do agree that maybe my assumption of maine in the top 25 was a little to quick and yes they should be in there but i just believe that Liberty should have been in the playoffs last year not the bears.

Well I'm not sure what you're basing this on but I'll assume it's record. Two D2 wins that have to be chucked out right away so they are 8-2 for the committee standards. They had one quality win over Elon and the quality of that win can be debated by some but the fact is that Elon was not going to playoffs either. They come from a very weak conference and lost to Presbyterian and Layfayette which were also not considered for the playoffs. I don't know if Maine should have been there but I damn sure wasn't distracted by the shiny buttons on the 10-2 Liberty record. I could use some clarification as to why Liberty over a pretty decent Maine team but that's all in the past anyway. I see no reason that Maine shouldn't be in the preseason Top 25 with a solid team returning and I believe they still have two real good RB's returning but there are no Maine guys keeping us updated and Col. Hogan can't do it all.

SDSU not being ranked is worse, IMO.
Thanks for the love Dane. We SDSU folk out here in the middle lands have gotten pretty used to not getting any love to start the season. And frankly, until we quit being the team that gives everyone a great game and start being the team that wins some of those games I'm damn fine with it.
Thanks for the passage on the "Blue Hen's". Very informative and educational. After having read it, I now understand what a "Blue Hen" is. So tell us, who were those guys wearing the winged helmets in 08??? They most certainly were not "Blue Hens"

Sure thing. We can bring a real NCAA football championship trophy too if you'd like to see what one of those looks like.
A lot of people think you guys might finally win one this year. This Delaware fan happens to have submitted you at #1 last night in the "other" site's preseason poll. It'll be interesting to see if you can live up to the lofty expectations.

No pressure.
I agree though, 'Nova should have a strong team this year.
My opuinikon of Big Sky and Great West teams ranked in the TSN Top 25:
Montana at #5 is too low. The Griz should remain at #2 until proven otherwise. (Same with Richmond at #1, for that matter.)
Weber at #7 is probably about right for now, but should not be behind borth UNI and SIU.
EWU at #13 is probably irrelevant. I think the NCAA sanctions will stick.
Cal Poly at #15 may be a little high, but within reason. The defense returns nearly all the starters and the offense remains potentially powerful.
Montana State at #17 may be on target. They return one of the best defenses in the FCS. The offense will have to step up, but the Bobcats return a young placekicker who will keep them in games and probably make an all-American team before he graduates.
Northern Arizona at #21 is over rated. I like the Lumberjack program, but they consistently under perform in big games and lost "Newcomer of the Year" running back Deonte Williams and NFL signee placekicker Robbie Dehaze, both prolific offensive contributors.
I suspect another Great West team will creep in to the top 25 by mid season (SUU? UC Davis?), and that Sacramento State will finally make the leap in 2009.

I was with you all the way until this statement. First SDSU, while likey desrving, is not in the Great West. Second, SUU averages one FCS win per year, not the platform contenders usually come from, and UC Davis is a long shot, not having a winning FCS season since joining. There are claims every year that SacSt will do something - and they don't. Have to see it to believe it.
