I remember back in the day there'd be game threads that were 15-20 pages long. Now most game threads don't get past page 1 here. Score update threads don't get past post 5 or 6.

FCS isn't dying, but it is definitely fading.
When you look at all the top flight teams who have left over the last 20 years (15 Championships???), it's the reality. Teams have moved in, but they didn't replace the quality that has left.
The biggest thing for me is, let's not pretend that FCS has ever really been relevant compared to FBS/I-A. I mean, it's definitely gotten more exposure with the advent of ESPN3, the FCS kickoff, etc, but it's still largely a niche thing that only alums of FCS schools really care about.

That being said, I do miss having schools like App, GSU and UMass around.

I didn't realize we'd dropped that much already by 2010. We had the longest streak of 20k average attendance in FCS up until 2009.

CS is better for chit chat. We all know each other here and can shit on each other and its no big deal.

There's some real bitches on AGS. I largely stay out of their Poli forum (unless somebody tees up a home run for me) because most of the donks in there are just turds. They make Houndawg look like Chizzartz

Plus, I like most of you assholes in here. I would travel for a CS gathering but nit for AGS

BTW, it isn't as though AGS is engaged in football talk. Only the Griz/NDSU circle jerk thread is impressively long...haven't read anything in it so I don't know if it is football related.

Cripes, the SHSU/McCheese thread is 12 pages about fvcking your cousin, moonshine, and Crown Royal. No football talk at all. :ohno:

The MEAC thread is talking about the exciting subject of ESPN hoping to get black women to watch a football game with the bands, pageantry, and advertisements targeted to women. No talk about the Celebration Bowl game at all. :ohno:

So, in other words, not much different than here. :coffee:

I took a peek at the SHSU board and that thing is not a very active site.

WTF are people doing, actually working or something? :suspicious:

More than UMass, yes. ODU sold more season tickets before they played a game than UMass ever had come to a game. They were already more important to the CAA and I-AA than UMass. Fertile recruiting grounds too.

Other than a few teams, most schools are represented by a few posters. CCU, CSU, JMU, El Cid, NAU, SDSU, Harvard, Yale, etc.. Don't have many posters and that equates to the football discussion being dominated by larger fan bases like NDSU and Montana. There's no incentive for me to post and about CCU football unless it's a big game or against a good school. Most of the CCU threads is me talking to myself or yelling kendradad that he's a douche.

Once upon a time (circa 2005 - 2008) AGS was an amazing board that had the best of both worlds...quality and entertaining FCS discussion and the Lounge/Off Topic area was a hoot and had some good discussions, too.

Then one particular individual (maybe more?) ran off a lot of the people who made the latter part great, and then a lot of other people who this person had no problem with also left because the place wasn't what it once was. The football discussion side of the board suffered as a result.

This board was basically the refuge for a lot of people that were run off and became the place to have the fun we used to have in the AGS Lounge area. It's not surprising that FCS discussion hasn't really taken off here.

Kudos to Ursus for rescuing AGS from the black hole it seemed to be getting sucked into and the people here who have been able to get some good FCS discussion going, but it just hasn't been the same.

All good things come to an end, I guess.

I'm one of the biggest apologists for FCS teams that can move up to FBS moving up, and even I think this is going too far.

The biggest difference I see in the FCS from the '10s and the '00s is that TV coverage has gone very much downhill for the both the playoffs and the regular-season and the playoff-selection is more based on the NCAA saving money than fair competition.

Aside from that, the FCS of the '10s very much resembles the FCS of the '00s with the MVFC playing the role of the CAA and NDSU playing the role of App State. People talk about NDSU's dominance winning 4 in a row but forget or don't realize App State could easily have won 4 in a row if it weren't for an injury to Armanti Edwards.

The thing is, even when the CAA was dominant, it wasn't by itself - the Southern had Appy St and had GSU and Furman was still good and there were some real good Wofford teams. Just the fact that Chatty is making the playoffs now out of that conference shows where it went. And there were great teams that came out of the Big Sky and the MVFC even when the CAA was tops - how many good UNI teams ended up losing to CAA teams? Same with Montana. Nowadays, though, it's the MVFC and not really a lot of anything else. There's just not the breadth of good teams anymore, that's the difference, because it's a shallower pool now than it used to be. And the dumbing down of the playoffs hasn't helped either.

This place is a great alternative to AGS. I don't know about most of you, but clenz, IMO, does the most football talk across both sites. Really, what's the point of talking about the Round 2 playoffs on AGS and then come over here and have the same conversation? Especially when most of the people that talk football, are either posting/lurking over at AGS?

I can buy that the FCS top 25 is not quite as strong as a whole as it was in the '00s, but just because a team that hasn't been in the top-25 regularly is now in the top-25 does not mean that team is not any good.

I'll use GSU in 2011 as an example…we made the semi-finals and were one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the FCS that year. If the Citadel kicks one field goal and UTC makes a two-point conversion, we sit at home for the playoffs that year. Compare that to the late 90s and early 00s where we could pretty much count on beating the slop out of any team not named Furman or App State. UTC has been playing some good football with Russ Huesman for a while, it's just that they never got a chance to prove themselves in the playoffs until GSU and App State were out of the way. In fact, in all the games we played with UTC and El Cid from 2010 to 2013, only one was not a loss or a close win.

It's also a mistake to assume that the CAA and programs like Montana, Furman, and Wofford won't rebound eventually. Every program without exception has down years. How many games did NDSU win in 2009? 3?

Again, I'm not saying things look rosy because they don't, but you are writing the obituary of the FCS prematurely.
