Really? The guy is free to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, without being nagged or told no, and that drives him to mass murder?Ibanez wrote:The gunman who killed nine people at an Oregon community college said in writings he left behind that everyone else was "crazy" and ranted about not having a girlfriend, a law enforcement official said Monday.

Re: How to Stop Mass Shootings
I kinda agree with '89 on this - everyone (well, many) wants to make it a "teensy bit harder" to get guns after an event like this, but it seems to be just trying to make ourselves feel better that we're doing something, while also ignoring the fact that the something we are doing will likely have zero impact on stopping the next similar shooting. But hey, the idea of doing something while not really solving anything is the gist of most politics.89Hen wrote:To me that sounds like a different discussion Kalm.kalm wrote:So it's absolutely impossible to make it even a teensy bit harder for them to get guns?

Pwns implied they will still be able to get guns regardless. How do you know for sure? You know about all the times someone has thought about it and decided not to?GannonFan wrote:I kinda agree with '89 on this - everyone (well, many) wants to make it a "teensy bit harder" to get guns after an event like this, but it seems to be just trying to make ourselves feel better that we're doing something, while also ignoring the fact that the something we are doing will likely have zero impact on stopping the next similar shooting. Re: How to Stop Mass Shootings
The thing of it is, saying a limit on guns will limit mass shootings is simply conjecture. There is equal conjecture on the other side that arming more people will actually discourage this behavior too. I couldn't tell you which is correct and to be honest, I really don't care. I've never owned a gun, probably never will, but I do see the argument from both sides.kalm wrote:Pwns implied they will still be able to get guns regardless. How do you know for sure? Explain how background checks will help when most mass shooters have no prior criminal history.kalm wrote:Pwns implied they will still be able to get guns regardless. How do you know for sure? You know about all the times someone has thought about it and decided not to?GannonFan wrote:

A lot of these shootings are planned months in advance so no waiting period or background check is going to deter it.

I think you are on to something. I bet you could plot the rise of independent women vs mass shootings by loser males and get a good correlation.
Maybe we should go back to arranged marriages with no divorces - then, the loser males would just do murder-suicides.

Re: How to Stop Mass Shootings
I don't think we have the medical resources to have psychotherapists sit down for several sessions to evaluate whether someone with no prior mental health issues is competent to own a gun. Nor do I think your local law enforcement has the time nor the training to effectively evaluate an individual to see if they are competent.
I think mental health is clearly a huge component of these shootings, but I'm not sure exactly how we allocate the resources to do effective mental evaluations in a burgeoning gun culture. Not to diminish the impact of gun violence since it is the largest method, but crazy people beat others with bats, stab with knives, strangle, punch, and burn people to death every year. The common denominator is mental health issues and a rigorous evaluation by some method and adequate treatment after it is discovered.

Hey, just saying. You don't see a lot of mass murders in Amsterdam, do you?dbackjon wrote:GannonFan wrote:You know, there's all these stories about these guys being upset because they aren't successful with women. How about the idea that we legalize prostitution?

No. But if the US was the size and population of Cecil County Maryland, the crime rate would be minuscule and the heroin problem would be legal.GannonFan wrote:Hey, just saying. You don't see a lot of mass murders in Amsterdam, do you?dbackjon wrote:

People magazine issues gun violence 'call to action'
http://news.yahoo.com/people-magazine-i ... 06870.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;NEW YORK (AP) — In the aftermath of the Oregon school shooting, People magazine did something it always does: It covered the story at length and wrote about each victim. But the magazine also did something it hasn't done before.
It issued a "call to action," asking readers to contact their representatives in Congress and find out what they're doing about gun violence. It printed the names and phone numbers of all 535 voting members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
"Ask your representatives about gun violence in America, and let them know what you think," says the accompanying message, which appears in the issue on newsstands Wednesday, and was posted on People.com.
