Capitalism > Catholicism?
Forget the whining about wealthy donors not getting preferential seating in St. Patricks Cathedral (which itself is amusing) but Fox Business Correspondent Charles Gasparino raises an interesting point regarding the Pope's left leaning, "anti - capitalist" views:
“He talks about capitalism in a negative way, forgetting the fact that capitalism has probably created more wealth and done more good maybe than even the Catholic Church has ever done.”
Is this true?

I don't have time to read it, but that quote seems a bit silly. Creation of wealth =\= doing good with that wealth.kalm wrote:Forget the whining about wealthy donors not getting preferential seating in St. Patricks Cathedral (which itself is amusing) but Fox Business Correspondent Charles Gasparino raises an interesting point regarding the Pope's left leaning, "anti - capitalist" views:

Wait a tick. Wealthy people have complained because they didn't get good seats in church?

Re: Capitalism > Catholicism?
And, regarding his behavior towards Castro's regime while in Cuba...this from the Cuban Forum for Rights & Liberties:
Yeah, he's a real peach.“We human rights activists, regime opponents and independent journalists have experienced days full of threats, harassment, telephone connections being cut off, homes besieged by the authorities, and violent, arbitrary arrests.
The behavior of the regime was expected. However, the position of the church has been surprising. The exaggerated and repeated shows of approval of the dictatorship, the silence toward its excesses, and the refusal to hear dissident voices have created broad discontent among Cuban believers and non-believers both within and outside of the island.”

I do find it hysterical that in this current anti-religious climate sweeping the nation that these anti-religious types suddenly give a fuck what the Pope says.

It's also great to see him bravely and accurately target the real enemy of humanity - greed/conks.

Re: Capitalism > Catholicism?
From what I can tell, Francis is mostly trying to remind people that capitalist societies aren't utopias, and that there will always be people who fall through the cracks. And I think you have to give the Church credit for helping fulfill that need.
Re: Capitalism > Catholicism?
Well he's saying a lot more than that and more forcefully....climate change, overpopulation, political divisiveness, fixing the errors of the church (abortion, marriage annulments, gays are welcome...)Grizalltheway wrote:From what I can tell, Francis is mostly trying to remind people that capitalist societies aren't utopias, and that there will always be people who fall through the cracks. Agreed. Just think it's funny that Z and others are trying to paint him as a Murrica hating commie because he doesn't quote Ayn Rand or something.D1B wrote:Well he's saying a lot more than that and more forcefully....climate change, overpopulation, political divisiveness, fixing the errors of the church (abortion, marriage annulments, gays are welcome...)Grizalltheway wrote:From what I can tell, Francis is mostly trying to remind people that capitalist societies aren't utopias, and that there will always be people who fall through the cracks. Re: Capitalism > Catholicism?
Yep. They finally have a challenge and to have a pope call out the conk catholics here is personally satisfying. Catholicism is absolutely antithetical to capitalism.Grizalltheway wrote:Agreed. Pope is saying and doing all the shit I've been clamoring for here for years.
I'd like to see him do more for the victims of their pedophiles, but I have a hunch he is - prudently and quietly.

I was focused mainly on the media. They are quick to paint the religious faction as intolerant assholes but then turn some of the Popes talking points into a "see Progressives are right" spin. I find it quite entertaining.kalm wrote:Who are you referring to? Since then? Look at the graph....me thinks they're doing it wrong.Starting with Julio Argentino Roca in 1880, ten consecutive federal governments emphasized liberal economic policies. The massive wave of European immigration they promoted—second only to the United States'—led to a near-reinvention of Argentine society and economy that by 1908 had placed the country as the seventh wealthiest developed nation in the world. Driven by this immigration wave and decreasing mortality, the Argentine population grew fivefold and the economy 15-fold: from 1870 to 1910 Argentina's wheat exports went from 100,000 to 2,500,000 t (110,000 to 2,760,000 short tons) per year, while frozen beef exports increased from 25,000 to 365,000 t (28,000 to 402,000 short tons) per year, placing Argentina as one of the world's top five exporters. Its railway mileage rose from 503 to 31,104 km (313 to 19,327 mi). Fostered by a new public, compulsory, free and secular education system, literacy skyrocketed from 22% to 65%, a level higher than most Latin American nations would reach even fifty years later. Furthermore, real GDP grew so fast that despite the huge immigration influx, per capita income between 1862 to 1920 went from 67% of developed country levels to 100%:
By 1865 Argentina was already one of the top 25 nations by per capita income.
By 1901 it had risen to 10th place—ahead of Germany, Austria and France.
By 1908 it had surpassed Denmark, Canada and The Netherlands to reach 7th place—behind Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Belgium. Argentina's per capita income was 70% higher than Italy's, 90% higher than Spain's, 180% higher than Japan's and 400% higher than Brazil's.
