Conk Cranks At It Again: Creationism in TX Textbooks

Creationists advising the Texas Education Agency, the state’s board of education, are no longer even trying to hide the fact that they want to insert pseudo-scientific material grounded in religious beliefs into public school science textbooks. Terrence Stutz of the Dallas Morning News reports that evolution detractors appointed to the review boards are urging the textbook publishers to ignore the Supreme Court (along with science) and push Creationism, or be rejected.

The National Center for Science Education and Texas Freedom Network found that the Creationists on the textbook review boards have also:

• asserted that "no transitional fossils have been discovered"

• insisted that there is no evidence for a human influence on the carbon cycle

• claimed that there is no evidence about the effect of climate change on species diversity

• promoted a book touting "intelligent design" creationism as a reliable source of scientific information

• denied that recombination and genetic drift are evolutionary mechanisms

• mischaracterized experiments on the peppered moth as "discredited" and as "fabrication[s]"

Due to the size of the Texas market, textbooks tailored to the state’s standards could be used across the country, making the ramifications of the Creationist influence even greater.

They just don't come any stupider than Texas, except maybe Bunco and BDMBSHT. :ohno:

Next time one of these pinheads tells you evolution doesn't happen, ask him why he has to get a different flu shot every year. :ohno:
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

So you think that evolution in living things with trillions of nucleated cells is the same as gradual mutations to a neuraminidase on a viral particle  ?

Seriously, people need to not let sand get into their vaginas over this. If we want more kids to grow up to be doctors and biomedical scientists they need to be learning cell biology and physiology and not worry so much about their opinions on evolution. There's a reason evolution isn't on the MCAT and doesn't appear in most every medical school and biomedical science curriculum. :coffee:

The reason is because it's common sense and completely observable...

That's the thing. It really isn't important that anybody believe in the overall theory of evolution. It has no practical effect. Whether one believes that the relationships between organisms are due to the scenario described by the overall theory of evolution or because "God made them that way" is totally irrelevant to what people can actually DO in terms of developing useful things.

It's true. For some reason people act like it's CRITICALLY IMPORTANT that the overall theory of evolution be accepted. And it's not. And I say that in spite of the fact that I'm among those who do accept it as the most plausible explanation for what we see.

It says a lot about how they think though. You can try and draw conclusions from the best available evidence, or you can fall back on a 2000 year old book full of stories that were passed down for thousands of years before someone put them in writing.

I don't know shit from shineola (sp) about evolution on the level some of you purport. But I do know my neighbor was born without wisdom teeth which, according to him, is becoming more common. That blew my mind!

Texas got it right (no pun intended). Every week, another high level member(s) of the scientific community (including former members of the IPCC) publicly recant their support of AGW theory. The ONLY folks who still blindly support AGW theory are either doing so for profit, to further a political/social engineering agenda, or merely are simpletons. ....what's your excuse, Cappy?

Just Texas, we need the rest of them for minimum wage labor. :coffee:

Maybe we could pay Mexico to take Texas back. 8-)

Finish Catholic seminary, get assigned to a NorCal parish (not one of the Stockton diocese), then we'll talk. With SNAP scoring $3m and up settlements, who needs Viagra...
